Texas Gov. orders National Guard to arrest illegal immigrants

By Christine Favocci

August 1, 2021

There’s a crisis at the U.S. southern border and Democrats are indifferent to it. That’s led the Republican governor of Texas to take drastic measures to stop the invasion.

Gov. Greg Abbott has called on the Texas National Guard to arrest people illegally crossing the border into the U.S., according to the Daily Wire. He made the declaration in a letter Tuesday after several attempts to get the problem under control.

The governor has been sounding the alarm on the burgeoning crisis while President Joe Biden’s administration dumped nearly 50,000 illegal immigrants into the interior of the U.S. Abbott and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey pleaded with other states in a June 10 letter to help where the federal government has failed.

“Securing our border with Mexico is the federal government’s responsibility,” the governors pointed out. “But the Biden administration has proven unwilling or unable to do the job. This failure to enforce federal immigration laws causes banns that spill over into every State.”

Other GOP-led states like Florida and South Dakota have sent their National Guard troops to help out at the Southern border. This latest move by Abbott petitioned Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard Major General Tracy R. Norris to activate his state’s troops for the purpose of apprehending the law-breaking migrants.

He requested the Guard assist the Department of Public Safety in apprehending illegals. “Beginning on May 31, 2021, I have issued multiple proclamations certifying under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code that the surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border poses an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster for certain counties and agencies in the State of Texas,” Abbott wrote.

The letter made it clear Abbott was serious about stopping the problem. “To respond to this disaster and secure the rule of law at our Southern border, more manpower is needed — in addition to the troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and soldiers from the Texas National Guard I have already deployed there — and DPS needs help in arresting those who are violating state law,” the letter said.

“By virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas, I hereby order that the Texas National Guard assist DPS in enforcing Texas law by arresting lawbreakers at the border,” Abbot ordered. This would grant the Guard troops the power to apprehend illegal immigrants.

Democrats don’t take illegal immigration seriously because they see potential voters. However, Republican governors are willing to do what’s necessary to stop the influx — even if it means calling on the National Guard to help apprehend migrants crossing the border illegally.

Border patrol had caught one Mexican for third time. They asked him, "Why do you keep coming?" The Mexican told them, "There are no jobs and no money in Mexico."

Don't know Texas law but generally National Guard doesn't have arrest power.

They can detain foreign invaders with legal authority from the governor, and apprehend them. It comes with the whole protecting our country from an invasion. They are defending our border.

I just wish our military would actually go after the enemies that are domestic and freely operating in all the highest offices.

National Guard doesn't have arrest power.

I would say they do IF the Governor gives it to them.

Don't you wish that was the case at Kent State? ;)

Dunno. Might have to come from the legislature. I seem to remember reading that in Texas the lt. gov. has more power than the governor.

The Guard didn't arrest anyone at Kent State. Seems that they were issued bullets (legal) and decided to use them.

My son patrolled lower Manhattan after 9/11 with the NY Guard and they did not have arrest power. If they thought someone required arresting, they had to get a NYC policeman to do it.
