Each country has different preferences for goods, and vehicles are no different. Consumers in a dense country might prefer smaller cars, while countries with wide expanses (and parking spots) open the way for larger trucks. Likewise, rugged terrain might call for vehicles that can adapt and scale quickly. And, as Visual Capitalists' Omri Wallach notes, it’s also a question of which manufacturer invested in the country. As the world’s largest automakers have raced to attract consumers in every corner of the globe, they built factories, renamed models, and even built specific cars to fit the tastes of individual countries. This infographic from Budget Direct Car Insurance highlights the best-selling vehicles in the world, using 2019 year-end sales data. What is the Most Popular Vehicle in Each Country? Though the map might vary across the board, one thing is certain: Toyota’s dominance. The Japanese automaker—which was also the most valuable automaker in the world for many years before being overtaken by Tesla—had the best-selling vehicle in 41 countries of the 104 countries tallied. It also had the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2019, the Toyota Corolla, though the sedan only took the top spot itself in five countries. As the best-seller in 16 countries, the Toyota Hilux truck (also known as the Toyota Pickup in North America) was the top vehicle in the most countries. It has a noticeably strong market share in the Southern Hemisphere, including in Argentina, South Africa, and Australia. The other consistent factor was the strength of local manufacturers. Many countries with large automakers had local models as the best-selling vehicles, especially in Europe. Cars are the Best-Selling Vehicles in the World So what do car consumers currently prefer? Currently, cars have a slight edge over trucks as the best-selling vehicles in the world. Of the 104 countries with sales tallied for the study, smaller cars often classified as “passenger vehicles” (including sedans, hatchbacks, and subcompacts) made up the majority of best-sellers, with 57 of the best-selling vehicles by country. Meanwhile, “light trucks” or “light commercial vehicles,” which include trucks, SUVs, and vans, were best-sellers in 47 countries. Best-Selling Vehicles by Type Hatchback: 12 Sedan: 25 Sedan/Wagon: 1 Subcompact: 19 SUV: 20 Truck: 24 Van: 3 But changing car consumption preferences are already making their mark. The electric vehicle (EV) Tesla Model 3 was already the best-selling vehicle in both the Netherlands and Norway, and other countries like China are increasing incentives for consumers to purchase EVs. That’s not even factoring in the slowdown of travel during the COVID pandemic, more workers going remote, and the semiconductor strain on automakers. A truly post-COVID world will likely transform the map even further.

I wasn't familiar with that. It seems that it's similar to a Toyota Tacoma (compact pick up). I bought a new Tacoma in 2013 and outfitted it for my contracting business then was promptly almost killed when some texting granny hit me head-on while I was driving my Honda Fit to check on my mother. The Toyota only has about 10,000 miles on it now. LOL. I'm too crippled up to work much now, so it doesn't get much use. I think it's been a year or so since I had to put gas in it. I need to burn it up before it goes bad. Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner. 2-3 cans of fuel stabilizer would not be against the law, would they?

"Hilux" is the model name that the US Tacoma was sold under in most of the world. Same same this. Most common sight in Middle East is a small well-used white Toyota truck with the black letters HILUX on the tailgate. I saw one once trundling down the street in an Arab city with the women and children in the bed of the truck with the more valuable livestock (a goat) strapped to the passenger seat with a seat belt. I kid you not.

No, I don't remember if I stabilized it when I filled up last. Stabilizer only works on fresh gas, adding it to old gas is a waste of money. I might see if I can snake a siphon tube down its neck and let my lawn guy burn it up. Should only be about 10 gallons left. (Edit) When I fill it up again, I'm gonna use premium and stabilize it. Gas just sitting, loses about one octane point/mo. Normal gas is usually good for a year, stabilized, two, they claim. Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner. I used to siphon off gas for the lawn mower and such out of vehicles long ago, but they've been putting roll-over valves in the filler neck of cars and trucks for twenty years now. It's almost impossible to get any fuel out of an automotive fuel tank any more. They say you can do it by fiddling in a skinny 1/4 inch tube past the valve (takes forever to drain) or by jamming the valve open with a chopstick. Let folks know how you manage to get gas out of your car. You might end up having to disconnect the fuel line from your gas tank!
It's a no-go in the Toyota. Seems there's an anti-siphon baffle about a foot and a half down the neck past the bend. The hose I use is a 1/4 ID/3/8 OD vinyl hose with a bevel on the end to help it sneak past obstructions. I had to pull about 10-15 gallons out of my 93 GMC Sonoma so Chip could drop the tank to replace the fuel pump. That was no problemo, I was kind of surprised. My 96 S-10 was a little more difficult, but not too bad, I think I took off the little spring steel flapper on that truck, it's been gone awhile, the Toyota replaced it. Screw that, too much effort. I'll just start running around in the Toyota rather than the Sonoma and burn it up. It'd be nice if they had a drain plug in the tank like the bad ol' days. Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner. True that. I've never been able to get gas back out of a Tacoma. We used to do a lot of badass stuff in the bad ol' days. When it used to snow a bit up north, on a Sunday the Krogers were still closed and you could take your Bug out to the parking lot and do doughnut until the po-lice showed up and gave you the get out of Dodge sign. Also there was nothing that could go broke on a 50s GMC truck that you could not fix yourself. I don't touch nothing on my truck nomore.
I'd rather someone figure out how to turn those stupid plastic grocery bags back into oil. I'd never have to fill up again. Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner. If you have an OBD II scan tool, the new stuff, '94 or '95+ isn't too bad. The problem with the 93 GMC is that its OBD I. Nobody remembers how that works. It cost about $2,000 and three whacks to get it running when it died on me a couple months ago. Turned out to be a coil, ignition module, cap, rotor, wires and fuel pump. The truck was running perfectly right up to when it died. It was like you turned off the key. I'm pretty sure there was a bit of shotgunning involved, hence three times to get it right. At least it's back to nominal. It only has about 60k on it, I wasn't ready to send it over the scales. Chip couldn't believe that I've kept the original R-12 A/C working for almost 30 years. I've still got about a 30# tank of R-12 left from back in the day. I've probably got about 20# of R-22 too. I'm not sure if that's been outlawed yet. I've been out of the game for about a decade now. Cars, buildings, it's all the same to me. They both have plumbing, electrical, HVAC, doors, windows, etc. Seen one, ya seen 'em all. Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. I did the plugs in a 2000 Tacoma years ago because they wanted some hellacious amount to do the job. (Those plugs go way down into the valve covers on a 4-cyl.) My Tacoma now is still with the warranty. I let the young guys handle it so's I won't bang my arthritic knuckles!
I hear ya, man. My hands are so bad that I can't make a fist anymore and have a hard time lifting my coffee pot without it feeling like my bones are going to snap. I had to hire a lawn guy this year because the vibration was killing me.
