Migrant families seeking asylum wear protective masks as they arrive at the U.S. side of the bank on an inflatable raft after crossing the Rio Grande river into the United States from Mexico in Roma, Texas, U.S.,

Illegal immigration to the US is flourishing — and so are the mischaracterizations about why migrants are coming here.

One of the most common distortions is the stock phrase that migrants come here “fleeing violence and persecution.” It’s meant to inspire sympathy, but here’s an assertion that’s much closer to the truth: Migrants are flooding into the US because they’re seeking higher-paying jobs and more generous welfare benefits, and because they think we’ll let them stay now that Sheriff Joe Biden is in charge.

Ecuador, a beautiful Andean nation of 17 million, illustrates this point. In the first six months of 2021, authorities apprehended more than 45,000 Ecuadoran migrants on the US southern border — a 434 percent increase over last year. (By comparison, during the same period, authorities caught about 25,000 Venezuelans, and apprehensions of Mexicans and Central Americans were up 144 percent.) These rather inconvenient migrants expose the “violence and persecution” storyline for what it is: hyperbole bordering on falsehood. For years, the Cuenca region in Ecuador’s south has sent more migrants to the US than any other in the country. Cuenca is a charming, safe place that’s also an increasingly popular retirement haven for Americans. International Living, Money, Stern and numerous other publications have rated Cuenca as one of the best places in the world to retire. In 2020, the US homicide rate was 11.4 per 100,000. In Ecuador, it was 7.7.

I just returned from a three-week trip to Ecuador with my wife and two children. We traveled to the country’s three largest cities (Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca), among other destinations, and couldn’t have felt more safe or welcomed. I spoke to many Ecuadorians, including quite a few who would like to move here. None mentioned fear of violence, persecution or climate change — another pet theory the left has for why many want to move here.

Ecuador’s per-capita GDP is just over $6,000, and everyone there who has entertained the idea of moving to the US has heard Biden’s welcoming rhetoric on migration.

One cab driver in Cuenca told me he was saving up the $15,000 he needed to pay a coyote to make it to Chicago illegally. A friend of his had recently made the journey successfully and said the coyotes could match him up with a child — age 8 to 15 or so was best — to improve his chances of being let in. Our 10-minute cab ride cost $2, and cab drivers in other cities like Quito and Guayaquil are also being undercut by Uber drivers, so it’s easy to understand why he doesn’t want to stay put. Ecuador became a haven for US-bound migrants from around the world under the leadership of former President Rafael Correa, a leftist amigo of Nicolás Maduro who was in office from 2007 to 2017. He believed in “universal citizenship” and welcomed anyone to travel to Ecuador visa-free. Ecuador became a hotbed for human smugglers, as thousands of migrants from the Middle East, Africa and beyond entered the country and then came to the US overland via Colombia, Central America and Mexico.

Ecuador later amended the policy, but citizens of just 11 countries need visas for Ecuador now, so it’s still a global rallying point for US-bound migrants.

Ecuador recently elected a new conservative president, Guillermo Lasso. After years of failed leadership from Correa and his leftist successor, Lenín Moreno, there’s some optimism that Lasso, a businessman and banker, will turn the economy around. But wages in Ecuador will likely never approach US levels, so migrants will continue to be tempted to cross illegally.

Economic migrants hail from many other countries besides Ecuador, of course. US authorities detained 24,633 Brazilians at the border in the first six months of the year, representing a 631 percent year-over-year increase. Brazil has its share of problems, but one cannot plausibly claim that migrants there are fleeing widespread violence or persecution. These figures don’t even include July, which reportedly saw the highest number of migrant apprehensions (210,000) in more than 20 years. Migrant families from Guatemala and Honduras arrive at the US side of the Rio Grande on July 28, 2021. I don’t blame migrants from Brazil, Ecuador or any country who want to better themselves by moving to the United States. But those who are desperate enough to break our laws, from Ecuador or anywhere else, tend to be less skilled and educated than those holding out hope to come legally. According to Pew Research, immigrants in the country illegally are much less likely than lawful immigrants to be proficient in English (34 percent vs. 57 percent in 2016) or hold a college degree (17 percent vs. 37 percent), for example.

As the most desirable destination in the world for immigrants, the United States can afford to be choosy, so there’s no reason to settle for anyone but the best and the brightest rather than simply letting in whoever shows up and then telling the American people that they came “fleeing violence and persecution.”

Democrats understand that Americans are sympathetic to those fleeing genuine danger and oppression. Lumping that comparatively small group of migrants into the same basket with a much larger group of economic migrants from countries like Ecuador is merely a political ploy in the service of misguided policy. –– ADVERTISEMENT ––

Is your country really a hot bed of human smuggling?

Ecuador, a beautiful Andean nation of 17 million, illustrates this point. In the first six months of 2021, authorities apprehended more than 45,000 Ecuadoran migrants on the US southern border — a 434 percent increase over last year. (By comparison, during the same period, authorities caught about 25,000 Venezuelans, and apprehensions of Mexicans and Central Americans were up 144 percent.)

That surprises me greatly. I would not have thought Ecuador would be the source of a huge number of migrants. While cost of living is low, other Latin countries are even lower such that domestic workers from Peru, for example, go to Ecuador to make the big bucks.

International Living has been pumping Cuenca as a retirement haven for the past 20 years or more, and I say the reason so many Gringos retire to there is precisely BECAUSE it's been so pumped by IL. I don't know that it's the best place in Ec either. It's colder there, and has 4 rivers running through it, and rains a bit more so flooding is not too uncommon.

I just returned from a three-week trip to Ecuador with my wife and two children. We traveled to the country’s three largest cities (Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca), among other destinations, and couldn’t have felt more safe or welcomed.

I do not concur, especially with Guayaquil. Crime is an ever present risk and something to get accustomed to. In higher crime areas, people put bars on their windows and doors. Houses outside of gated communities, which are common, are walled off with broken glass cemented to the top to deter burglars. That is the norm even in smaller towns.

I spoke to many Ecuadorians, including quite a few who would like to move here. None mentioned fear of violence, persecution or climate change — another pet theory the left has for why many want to move here.

True, people want to go to the USA for the money, not because of safety. That in spite of the above. The crime risk is just something that is normal there, and one manages it to stay safe.

Ecuador’s per-capita GDP is just over $6,000, and everyone there who has entertained the idea of moving to the US has heard Biden’s welcoming rhetoric on migration.

$6k is about the min wage. I'm not sure it's the average wage, but that figure needs to also take into account that the dollar goes about 3x further in Ec than in the USA. Food and housing is very cheap by US standards, and utility bills are about non-existent due to the constant spring climate.

...and cab drivers in other cities like Quito and Guayaquil are also being undercut by Uber drivers, so it’s easy to understand why he doesn’t want to stay put.

That much is true. Uber drivers are really killing themselves thinking they are making money. They charge so little that they are rally selling their cars a little bit with each ride and they don't even know it, and the taxi drivers lose business as a result. I imagine that's true in the US also. The smartest Uber drivers would simply take people on trips that they are going to make anyway and accept the money on those terms.

Ecuador became a haven for US-bound migrants from around the world under the leadership of former President Rafael Correa, a leftist amigo of Nicolás Maduro who was in office from 2007 to 2017.

That's a head scratcher for me, but then again, I'm not in the human smuggling business. There are plenty of countries between Ec and the US that people would need to pass through so why bother going to Ec first? Given Correa's animosity about the USA, I'm not sure he would be pushing the USA as a great destination for people to go to, unless it was under the guise of effectively invading the US.

That's the first I've heard of such a thing. Lots of Venezuelans went to Ecuador but that was because of Venezuela.

Wages in Ec will never approach US levels because the cost of living will never approach US levels. But yes, some men will go to the US to make the post lockdown $25/hour and live in a shack and send $1000/month to their families, which is all they'd need to sustain.

But this kind of thing is what draws my attention to the fundamental cause of illegal immigration to the USA: The status of the dollar as the World Reserve Currency. Because of that status, the US has effectively become lazy because instead of exporting goods like normal countries do, The US can export fiat dollars that can be cranked out at will. Our country gets flooded with fiat, which makes wages higher, and at the same time, makes it cheaper to outsource to labor outside the country. We run a massive trade debt and the world wants dollars, and the US has them to give away.

Remove the WRC status of the dollar, and the world won't want them any more, and migrants won't be so enthusiastic about migrating to the USA. America will be forced to reestablish domestic manufacturing and the trade debt will go away. In that way, I suggest the USA has brought the immigration problem upon itself as a direct result of being privileged with the WRC status of the dollar.
