Sparks Speculation Of Volcanic Eruption

"Without a doubt, the current seismic swarm represents a significant change in the activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano and is related to a process of magmatic intrusion..."

Poster Comment:

If this volcano blows, leave the east coast on the first plane out. That rock could fall into the ocean and cause a tsunami that would wipe out the east coast.

700 earthquakes...

Isn’t that really just one long quake?

should the volcano blow, those on the East Coast wouldn't make it to the airport on time.

No. Prolonged movement of magma is alarming. Alaska in 1964 was the biggest in the US. The West Coast and the New Madrid fault are likely to as devastated as Alaska was. Just with more people and lots of Mexicans and Blacks to be relocated.

from site

Most earthquakes are at shallow depths around 8-12 km, suggesting that new magma is currently intruding into a reservoir under the volcano.

Whether or not this might be leading up to new volcanic activity is impossible to say at this stage, as there seem not to be other signs of significant volcanic unrest at this stage. Similar earthquake swarms have occurred in the past as well, most recently in late Dec last year; however back then, the quakes were deeper (at around 30 km depth), which could indicate that magma has now risen higher in the volcano's underground storage systems.

La Cumbre Vieja volcano last erupted in 1971, and it is considered one of the most active volcanoes of the Canary Islands. The situation clearly merits close monitoring.
