'This Isn't Done Between Allies:' France Furious After Biden Makes 'Brutal' Foreign Policy Move

By Jack Davis

September 16, 2021 at 12:34pm

French leaders who were giddy in November after President Joe Biden defeated former President Donald Trump, bared their teeth Thursday after losing a multi-billion-dollar submarine deal with Australia.

Earlier this week, a planned $40 billion deal with France was torpedoed after the United States, Britain and Australia announced a deal that would provide Australia with American nuclear-powered submarines, according to Reuters.

The France-Australia deal had first been agreed to in 2016, and was reconfirmed just weeks ago. Its demise led French officials to dish the ultimate insult by comparing Biden to the predecessor he loathes.

“This brutal, unilateral and unpredictable decision reminds me a lot of what Mr. Trump used to do,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said. “I am angry and bitter. This isn’t done between allies.”

“It’s a stab in the back. We created a relationship of trust with Australia and that trust has been broken,” Le Drian said.

The deal is more than just dollars, but is expected to complicate relations between Biden — who came into office promising to court Europe — and the European Union.

“This is a clap of thunder and for many in Paris a Trafalgar moment,” tweeted Bru no Tertrais, deputy director of the Paris-based think tank the Foundation of Strategic Research. The 1805 battle of Trafalgar was a major English victory over a French fleet.

The deal will “complicate the transatlantic cooperation in and about the region. Beijing will benefit,” he said.

A statement issued by Le Drian and Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly said the decision “is contrary to the letter and spirit of the cooperation that prevailed between France and Australia, based on a relationship of political trust as well as on the development of a very high-level defense industrial and technological base in Australia,” according to Fox News.

“The American choice to exclude a European ally and partner such as France from a structuring partnership with Australia, at a time when we are facing unprecedented challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, whether in terms of our values or in terms of respect for multilateralism based on the rule of law, shows a lack of coherence that France can only note and regret,” the statement said.

The statement said the “regrettable decision” bolsters “the need to make the issue of European strategic autonomy loud and clear. There is no other credible way to defend our interests and our values in the world, including in the Indo-Pacific.”

Parly called the action “very bad news with regards to keeping one’s word,” adding that France is “clear-eyed as to how the United States treats its allies,” according to The Guardian.

“In terms of geopolitics and international relations, it’s serious,” she said.

French politician Marine Le Pen called the end of the deal between France and Australia “a political disaster,” “a public humiliation” and a “very serious attack on its image as an industrial power.”

According to the Daily Mail, the doorway to the U.S. deal was opened when Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had concerns about the French company’s deadline and price disputes, and feared that the new submarines would not arrive until 2030.

France has been an ally since the Revolution in 1776.

Not exactly. Are you aware of the Quasi War?

The Quasi-War, which at the time was also known as "The Undeclared War with France," the "Pirate Wars," and the "Half War," was an undeclared naval war between the United States and France. The conflict lasted between 1798 and 1800, and was a formative moment for the United States. Although it occurred during John Adams' presidency, the Quasi War involved George Washington in two significant ways.

The Quasi War was the first time that American neutrality, which had been championed by Washington as president, found itself under attack. In addition, once the conflict began John Adams sought George Washington's military expertise, reinstating him as Commander-in-Chief.

During Washington's presidency, Great Britain and revolutionary France entered into a war with each other. Seeking American support, France sent an emissary, Citizen Genet, to the United States. Genet was undermining a neutrality agreement that Washington had signed earlier that year, and he attempted to circumvent the American government by landing in South Carolina rather than the then-capitol at Philadelphia.

Instead of meeting immediately with the president, Genet recruited privateers, exploited political divisions between supporters and detractors of revolutionary France, and slowly made his way to the capitol. Once in Philadelphia, Genet was denounced by Washington. Ultimately, the United States refused support to France and signed the controversial Jay Treaty with England, which settled residual issues from the Revolutionary War and declared friendly diplomatic and trade relations with Great Britain.

The Jay Treaty angered the French, who responded by harassing American vessels at sea. The new president, John Adams, sent ambassadors to France where they encountered an unstable French government that sent its own officials (referred to as "X" "Y" and "Z" in the published papers) to meet the Americans. The French officials, on behalf of foreign minister Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord sought a bribe, a loan, and an apology from the Americans. Talleyrand hoped to reinforce his own political power while also gaining American support for France.

Australia has been completely coopted by the Chinese. Biden sending Australia our allies, our American Built Submarines, will just be handing the Chinese over our submarine technology.

If anyone believes that these things are happening in a vacuum or that Biden and his son are doing something good for this country, i suggest just keep watching that Met Gala crap and keep getting your vaccine boosters. Because either way, America is going to be China’s bitch until the end of this asshole’s term in office.

I don't see Australia as being a particularly happy partner with China. Australia exports a lot of raw resources to China, so they are a needed trade partner for Au. I think Australia kinda wishes other countries would buy their stuff so they wouldn't have to sell to China.

I don't think Australia would be parting with military hardware, or any finished goods they'd have to import.

Do you really think the Aussies would stab us in the back like that?

Talk to many Australians lately? You might want to. Their entire government has been bought up by the CCP. Bad things are happening there.

I know a woman here in town who runs the local food bank. She has relatives in Australia. She also says they still have their guns.

I doubt it is quite the same as here in the U.S., but who knows what can happen over there.

The CCP might control the government, but they do not control the people. ;)

This happened during the French Revolution.

At the start of the French Revolution they killed all the lawyers first.

The people tore down the Bastille and used the blocks of stone to build bridges over the Seine River.

BTW, Marie Antoinette, when informed the people had no bread, never said, "Let them eat cake." ;)
