When I drove big trucks back around 2002 or 2003, I had this green kid named Chad with me. We had just picked up a load of fresh frozen chickens in Nebraska. He was driving back to Associated Wholesale Grocers in Springfield.
I got us to the point there was no way he could make a mistake. I told him, "You go up to the 4-way stop, make a left and go across the river. You take I-29 south." I hit the sleeper.
I woke up and opened the curtain to the sleeper just in time to see the sign, "KANSAS STATE LINE 4 MILES".
I said, "Stop this truck right now. How are you going to explain being in Kansas when you're not supposed to be there?"
I had to back us into a gravel road and turn us around. Then I got us back to where we were supposed to be. I had to route him around the scale since if they were checking logs it would have been heavy fines.
I told him, "Wake me up if you are not sure you are on the right road,"
I had him get off interstate on Hwy 7 which crossed U.S. 65. That went right into Springfield.
He awakened me and I could tell by the angle of the tractor we were on the right road. I told him, "You're on the right road. Keep going until you see U.S. 65, then turn right."
This was the 2nd time in the same trip he missed a turn. I'll bet he is no longer driving trucks. He just couldn't find his way around. :-/
