Most of them didn't arrive from Haiti but from Chile, Brazil and Panama where they were not doing as well as they would have liked and hoping to do better in the U.S. The few hundred sentto Haiti were horrified.
They owed bankers and sold the lumber. That was a disaster for their soil.
I had heard the Haitians cut their trees for cooking fires.
Nevertheless, you cannot deforest and expect the soil to remain stable.
All the trees around Lake Tahoe were cut to build shoring in the Comstock Lode. They never reforested. Now the hillsides are sliding into the lake. :-/
