He was a guard at Cook County Jail before he went over to work highway department.
He told me this one black guard at the jail, because he had a good job, he was able to get a mortgage on a 4-flat on near west side.
In 1968 when MLK, Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis, they cancelled the leaves for all the guards since most of the population of the jail was black.
The black guard lived on 2nd floor. He opened the door to go to work. This black guy was standing on the landing below. He was ready to light a Molotov cocktail.
He said to him, "Whatchoo think you doing?"
The black guy said, "I'll show whitey. I'm gonna burn down this building."
He pulled his pistol and killed that guy right where he was standing.
My friend asked him, "How are you going to explain that?"
The black guard replied, "When they come along and pick him up, it's just another dead nigger."
