In this powerful; classic military drama; Rich Richardson (Clark Gable; "The Misfits") is a hard-driving; dedicated submarine officer with a single-minded purpose - to seek out and smash the Japanese destroyer he believes sunk his former ship. Given a new command; Richardson drills his men and first officer Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster; "Elmer Gantry") to point of mutiny as he relentlessly trains them for the battle ahead. At last; word comes of the destroyer's position; and disobeying orders; Richardson finally confronts his foe; unaware that and even greater enemy lurks nearby - one who's been targeting him for a watery grave. Directed by Robert Wise; the legendary director of "West Side Story;" with a stellar supporting cast headed by Jack Warden; Brad Dexter and Don Rickles.
I watched this flick the other day. I saw it as a kid of whatever age as I remembered some key scenes. Not sure why they called it "Run Silent, Run Deep" as through the whole movie, they never really ran deep and only ran silently for about 30 seconds.
And for a sub captain to keep his sub on the surface after an enemy destroyer starts firing on it is, in my book, court martial material. I can understand the literary intent for the audience to be impressed with a quick dive and torpedoing of the destroyer, but in real life, there has to be a better way.
I guess it's listed as "age restricted" on YT because of the scene where the crew pats the pinup on the butt in pure male chauvinist pig fashion, at least by 21st century standards.
But all in all, interesting to see what Hollywood came up with back in the day.
Another good one: The Enemy Below. That flick showed both the German and American perspective of naval warfare.
"I should have died many times, Captain. This time, it's your fault."
"I didn't know. Next time I won't throw you the rope."
"I think you will."
