Here is the break down with regards to acting, guns, and gun safety on the set.

Actors, and actresses have to take a mandatory gun safety course usually as part of their liability insurance for the film production in case things like this happen. As per the course, one of the things that not only the prop master is supposed to do, but also the actor, is to check the firearm to make sure that it is either loaded or unloaded, and in serviceable condition. This goes to checking the ammunition, and functionality of the firearm.

Here is where Alec Baldwin went wrong. He did not perform his mandatory safety check which usually takes less than a minute. If he had checked the gun and checked the ammunition himself, then he would have likely asked a question or two, and maybe prevented something from happening. The ARMORER should have been in a supervisory role with the star, in order to make sure that he was safe.

The blame in my mind lies with both Alec Baldwin, and the armorer as there should have been ZERO live rounds. By live rounds, I mean the ones that have projectiles in them, not just the wadding to contain the powder charge.

Funnier still, these prop guns, are glorified Starter pistols and sometimes they do malfunction but the rarity of them having malfunctions is nothing.

This was someone deliberately putting a live round in the firearm, and letting Alec have the gun without checking it. What does this do for his future? Likely nothing as he will probably use it as a means to ban guns. The leftists will use this event to say that ALL GUNS ARE EVIL AND KILL PEOPLE, because it’s too easy for trustworthy people to do something bad on a movie set, so everyone has to give up their guns. FOR THE CHILDREN.

Wait a minute -- you're pointing out that the cui bono aspect of this is very tangy. The affair is a sensational news noise and it's possible that it's as fake as antigun pantomimes like Sandy Hoax and the shooting of US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

The Powers That Should Not Be will do anything to get where they want to go, and they know the sheeple are absolute suckers for melodrama -- the faker the better.

The story apparently has now taken a turn towards manslaughter as apparently there was a bit of a dust up between Alec, and the director about doing another take. He apparently told them “What if I just shot the both of you?” Then pointed and shot the director of photography, which the bullet passed through, striking the director.

The gun was loaded with ONE live bullet which could have struck anyone at any time. The chain of custody on that gun revolves around 3 people, including Baldwin. So at any point someone could have put a live round in there. The issue for me is that with this bit of news, Baldwin failed in the adherence of the first rule of simple gun safety. Don’t point a gun, live or prop at anyone.

He could have killed another actor at any point in the shooting of that film.

That being said, He may actually get into a lot of legal issues as the result of all of this. His actions leading to, and after the event are going to haunt him. I would not have wished that on anyone, even Baldwin. The issue for me is that the lefties in this country will find a way to spin this into their favor, even though it was one of their own who did this through simple carelessness and negligence.

The bullet passed thru the cinematographer's body and into the director's? Sounds like a freak shot for the history books.

The fact that he pointed the gun and said that surely proves malice i.e. motive so the law has no way around throwing the book at him -- which it won't do, alas. Safety-wise this is the equivalent of driving through a red lite in a busy city, so it'll set terrible precedents when he beats the rap with 100 hours of community service or whatever.

Not so freaky. A .44 magnum bullet will easily pass through a human torso. Most loadings of the lower powered .44 Special caliber will too, but not as readily.

Trained shooters always consider the fact that a person or a game animal when shot might not stop the bullet, and that whatever or whoever is behind the target is also at risk of being hit.
