Was laffing at exxon's quirky style

A bit of a 4um history lesson may be in order... If I'm wrong about certain details, feel free to correct them.

Esso

When I caught up to this group of hardcore patriots, it was at a forum called LibertyPost.com. After time, the sight owner, Goldi-Lox (that should be a danger sign), turned for some reason (maybe 911), and a new site was born, FreedomUnderground.com. I think most of the LP folks were a splinter group from FreeRepublic.com when the honcho there lost his mind.

At LP and FU, my screename was Stand Opposed, somewhat clunky and unrefined. Most everybody was abbreviating my name as S.O. or just SO which I found to be kind of annoying.

Something happened at FU and Christine and Pinguinite, formed 4um. I've been here since the git-go, but changed my name to Esso (as in S.O or SO) which is much less burdensome. It has no relation to Exxon/Mobil (XOM), but, full disclosure, I do own 2,000 shares of XOM, half of which was bought with money languishing in a money market account. I got it half price sometime after the scamdemic started a year or so ago. When I bought the last batch, the dividend yield was north of 10%. Try to get that in a money market, now it won't even cover Bidet's inflation.

Let me try to get back on track. The progression as I understand it:

1. FreeRepublic.com.
2. LibertyPost.com, where I got involved as Stand Opposed.
3. FreedomUnderground.com.
4. Freedom4um.com which didn't have a name yet. I changed my name to Esso, which has a really distinctive logo which is handy at ZeroHedge.

The guy who came up with the 4um name, was a guy with the screenname Arator. Last I heard of him, he was travelling the world, stateless, on a sailboat. It was really clever merging forum with the fourth home of all us misfits.

Some other current aliases of mine: PacMan, Cap'n Brandon, Robert...

(Edit) I don't give this shit away for free. You'll get a bill.

(Edit2) The price of XOM has gone up enough that the dividend yield is down to 5.95% today.

FR was formed first in response to the Bill Clinton presidency where bashing the president for any and every reason or non-reason was approved. Bush 2 came into office in early 2001, and then 911 hit, and the rules at FR changed dramatically as there was an R president in office. Some 6-9 months after 911 when all criticism of the R admin was prohibited on FR, Goldi-lox (Sally) contacted me through a common link about building a competitive site for FR that would actually allow free speech.

So I built LP, with her assist and general guidance. Inevitably, as is human nature, disagreement about how LP was being run and moderated arose and FU was formed as an alternative to LP.

After human nature again reared it's ugly head at FU, Christine wanted another forum that she could run, and, in choosing the name, "4um" was selected in humorous recognition that it as the 4th forum in general existence. I remember joking that we should reserve the names "5um", "6um" and "7um" for future expansion as disputes and division continued, which is still funny even now, if I say so myself!

FU folded for lack of participation or what not. I was never active there so don't know details.

LP folded after Sally died, alone in her condo, some years back. The guy doing the tech support on LP is a friend of mine to this day and he received no word of her passing as Sally lived a very solitary life with no family or friends. He asked me if I knew anything about Sally having not heard from her past a domain name renewal, and finally got some advice to call the Sheriff's office in Sally's home town. He did so and learned in short order that she had died. Packages had accumulated outside her condo door and the building manager finally called police to do a welfare check and they found her deceased, but with her cat still there.

I was told the deputies were glad to get a call from my friend a great many weeks after the fact as they had been unable to find anyone with any ties to Sally at all. All sad, of course, regardless of what one thinks of her running LP.

Without any fair method of deciding what veteran LPer should have the right to take over the site, the decision was made to close LP down, though preserved in static read-only for posterity, but also as an on-line notice to anyone that might search for Sally to learn of her fate, and my friend told me her ex-husband and son did learn of her passing that way just within the last 2-3 years or so after making contact.

A bit of a diversion to the topic, perhaps, but still noteworthy in the grand scheme of forum drama, I'd say. The LP site is still up at this time, but I think my friend will not be renewing the domain any more.

Thank Bidet. Thanks to his and the Squat's climate hysteria, I can give away more money per year than I spend on myself thanks to his boneheadednessment.. It'd be nice if I could write it off on my taxes, especially the $4k I spent on a lawyer (former Marine) to get a child away from a crackhead mother, back into her father's arms. I thought 'legal fees' were deductible. Guess it's gotta be business related, and I'm definately not a 501c3.

STA-BIL Fast Fix Small Engine Treatment.

I've had to replace the carb on my mower every 3-4 years (Tecumseh engine, 6.5HP) because of the crappy ethanol, even after draining it each fall.

It started acting stupid again this year, but this seemed to fix it. I used like an ounce in one tank instead of the recommended ounce per 2 gallons, starts right up now. Stinks like hell, but no noticeable smoke.

Green stuff, not the fuel stabilizer.

Full report next spring.

I don't think that's a good idea, draining gas. I always use Sta-Bil for my small engine gas year round. At the change of the seasons, I always fill them up with the stabilized fuel so there's no oxygen/air to leave deposits behind. Has worked good for a long time for me.

I've always used Sta-Bil, gas is good next season but carbs ruined unless I run them dry (mower and snow blower). Had to change carb on snow blower about 10 years ago, no problems since. I think the mower puked because it sat for about 3 months last year (August-Novemeber dry spell) in tool shed with gas in it. It may have been because it was hot, but it was really hard to start this year (would run for like 10 seconds and die). I always drain snow blower by early April, it starts right up.

edit: the ethanol disolves the rubber O-rings. Are you by any chance privy to pure gasoline? I would have to drive like 40 miles to get some. (But I guess not, no need for Sta-Bil with pure gas)

I will definitely try that STA-BIL. I guess I'm not a carb man. I super cleaned the carb on my not-too-old Cummins/Onan generator and unstopped some tiny holes several times, and could never get it to run right. Finally put a $19 Chinese ebay carb on it last year and it runs like new again.

My 4-5 year old Stihl chain saw got to where it would not run more than a few seconds at a time after it warmed up. Took the carb off and cleaned it out as best I could several times, turned all the screws every which way, cleaned the air filter, removed the spark arrester, replaced the fuel tank vent and spark plug. Finally put a $16 ebay carb on it yesterday and it runs great. A little rich (and slow) at full throttle, but I haven't tried to adjust that yet.

I agree that cheap corn likker in the gas is the culprit.

Starting an engine and letting it run a while every month or so has to be better than draining the gas, no?. Especially if you let it run long enough that you have add some fresh gas once in a while.

I rebuilt a single barrel Rochester for a Ford straight 6, worked fine. The small-engine carbs are a lot trickier, like working on a wristwatch.

Edit: it was a Carted AFB, not a Rochester. Rochester is GM, I think.

Plus, there is no f-ing way I am going to go out and start the mower in January when it is -10 degrees and blowing ice at 50mph. :)

Are you by any chance privy to pure gasoline?

Yeah, I guess there's some places you can get non-ethanol gas, or you could get engineered gas from a racing shop or something. If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.

For $1,000, I'll come hold you for a night, if that helps.

Starting an engine and letting it run a while every month or so has to be better than draining the gas, no?

Well, yeah. If you're not a crippled up lazy fart like me.

You can buy "lawnmower gas" (no Ethanol) at hardware store for like $10 a quart. Screw that.

I'm good, thanks for the kind offer though.:)

My first two trucks -- F100s -- had the inline 240. Cylinder wall cracked on the 2nd one; replaced it with an inline 300. Wasn't much to those old carbs -- easy. Almost everything on those old trucks was easy. Heater core? -- 10 minutes to replace. Distributor, rocker arms, lifters -- all right there. I could drop the transmission in 45 minutes -- on my chest! -- balance the flywheel by trial and error adding weights in convenient pre-threaded holes (had to rig a temporary ad hoc mount for the starter) then re-install the transmission in another hour and a half.

The gas station nearest me says they got it -- and I buy it sometimes for my small engines. But it's more expensive, and I'm not sure I trust 'em not to put the likker in it and lie about it.

I told you it was expensive. Another option might be sucking up to the FBO at a small airport and buying 100LL (I think). I doubt that has ethanol in it. There's gas stations that sell non-ethanol stuff, you'll have to search your area, it's a whole lot less than $40/gal.

I'm good, thanks for the kind offer though.

How about $500/night? OK, I'll pay you 500.

He's pretty busy with the squirt as a single father. Leaving the tanks full of stabilized gas has always worked good.
