What does it do to a car engine to idle for 7 hours? Poor slobs.

Idling for hours? Good question. Some vehicles handle it pretty well, and some don't. Cop cars and ambulances and such often have special mods for that -- increased oil capacity, auxiliary oil cooler, larger or extra radiator cooling fans, etc.

If the wind is just right (or wrong) it seems you could get exhaust fumes in the car's interior cabin when idling for a long time.

An engineer told me that once when he tested a new car, after idling for a few hours the floorboard got so hot that the seat belts melted where bolted down to the floor. Catalytic converters were still fairly new, and car manufacturers didn't have all the heat shielding figured out yet.

Sheesh, these vaxx rubes are lucky their cars don't kill them. So police cars are built different under the hood?

So police cars are built different under the hood?

Yes, they often are. Some vehicle manufacturers offer a so-called "police package" on some of their models. In addition to the better engine cooling stuff I listed, they also typically have a beefier suspension, upgraded electrical system, and in some cases a more rugged and durable interior. And if I recall correctly, sometimes even a larger or more powerful engine, and a heavier-duty transmission with extra cooling.

I have an old magazine article from 1974 or so about the Ford Torino police cars. They actually made four different versions, starting with a six cylinder for basic patrol and writing parking tickets. Then was a couple of intermediates, with (if I remember correctly) a 302 and the other with a 400. Then there was the Highway Patrol model. A 460, complete with oil cooler like the old Drag Pack 429s. The oil cooler was the reason most cars could not get away, they would conk out after a few miles at top speed.

Before I watch the video, am I correct in assuming there is a 440 MoPar on the list? I knew several cops, they swore the 1969 Plymouth was the best ever.

A Polara, I think.

Yep, 1969 Polara 440. I think the Plymouth Fury was more popular with police agencies because it was the same basic car, but cheaper.
