What does it do to a car engine to idle for 7 hours? Poor slobs.

Idling for hours? Good question. Some vehicles handle it pretty well, and some don't. Cop cars and ambulances and such often have special mods for that -- increased oil capacity, auxiliary oil cooler, larger or extra radiator cooling fans, etc.

If the wind is just right (or wrong) it seems you could get exhaust fumes in the car's interior cabin when idling for a long time.

An engineer told me that once when he tested a new car, after idling for a few hours the floorboard got so hot that the seat belts melted where bolted down to the floor. Catalytic converters were still fairly new, and car manufacturers didn't have all the heat shielding figured out yet.

The addiction to jungle noise is part of people's DNA now. At a marvelous, atmospheric Italian restaurant last night I managed to get the waitress to turn the rock concert down but not to switch to the place's usual easy listening channel. I despise Sinatra, Tony Bennett et al but have been going there partly because their genre is mellow and retro.

The crowd there is changing as the thump thump thump gets more obnoxious.

What does it do to a car engine to idle for 7 hours?

Diesel engines will not throw off much heat when they idle at 750 rpm. In winter we had a throttle lock to keep the idle up over 1,000 rpm. Then you could sleep with some comfort with heat blowing in the vents.

Matter of fact you in winter you need ether to start them. You just shoot a little squirt into the air intake.

In Chicago on NW side at Dunning yard there were five trucks parked outside in winter. None had engine block warmers plugged in. Those idiots blew the heads off three engines using ether. That was a minimum of $10,000 each to replace the engines. :-/

exhaust fumes in the car's interior

I was driving on I-55 in Illinois in winter time and cars were sliding off the road. I stopped and told one of them, "I called in your location. But it might be a while before a tow truck gets here to pull you out. Run the car 15 minutes every hour to keep some heat. Otherwise you might get exhaust build up inside."

You can't give some people advice. No way to know for certain if they took it. ;)

So police cars are built different under the hood?

Yes, they often are. Some vehicle manufacturers offer a so-called "police package" on some of their models. In addition to the better engine cooling stuff I listed, they also typically have a beefier suspension, upgraded electrical system, and in some cases a more rugged and durable interior. And if I recall correctly, sometimes even a larger or more powerful engine, and a heavier-duty transmission with extra cooling.

That is correct. GM's designation used to be 9C1.

Ha! At first I thought you meant #6 in the "Pros" list: "Police cars give you room to breathe." !!!

Your #6 is real. A company I worked for had a fleet of white Crown Victorias they used for test vehicles. Looked just like police cars of the day. Purposely drove them 500-1000 miles per day (one or two shifts) just to rack up miles. And other drivers would all slow down when they saw 'em, thus clogging both lanes.

I have an old magazine article from 1974 or so about the Ford Torino police cars. They actually made four different versions, starting with a six cylinder for basic patrol and writing parking tickets. Then was a couple of intermediates, with (if I remember correctly) a 302 and the other with a 400. Then there was the Highway Patrol model. A 460, complete with oil cooler like the old Drag Pack 429s. The oil cooler was the reason most cars could not get away, they would conk out after a few miles at top speed.

In the early 70's, Alabama Highway Patrol had a fleet of AMC Javelins. The later California Highway Patrol Mustangs were pretty lame in comparison.

Yep, 1969 Polara 440. I think the Plymouth Fury was more popular with police agencies because it was the same basic car, but cheaper.
