because of the billionaire family's major role in 500,000 opioid deaths in US

The Tate has removed a plaque inscribed with the Sackler name, due to the billionaire family's link to the opioid crisis that has killed more than 500,000 people.

Alongside the removal of the plaque, marking the Sackler escalator at Tate Modern in London, plans are also in place to remove a sign next to the Sackler lifts as well as to rename the Sackler Octagon at Tate Britain. The Sackler family earned £9.6 billion from Purdue Pharma, which produced and sold the highly addictive painkiller Oxycodone under the brand name OxyContin.

Why is it the families' fault that patients did not follow the label directions of their product?

Fantastic news -- can't wait to see if the chosen have any comment on it. What's a Tate?

No shit. When my pain gets bad, the only thing that'll touch it is methadone or oxycodone. I don't know why anyone would take that crap for fun, it gives me a nasty hangover. Fortunately, I only have to take it once every couple, three weeks.

Normally I get by with aspirin which doesn't do my tinnitus any favors.

The most effective pain-killer that I've ever had was morphine, IV, when I was hospitalized. The stuff works.

Girlfriend had back surgery and they gave her a hand button release for morphine as dictated by pain.

I think she could use it at 15 minute intervals.

They marketed heroin as the safe alternative to heroin, basically knowing it was heroin.

Excellent!

Patient-Controlled Analgesia Pumps

www.hopkinsmedicine.org/h...ontrolled-analgesia-pumps

They typically administer a low baseline dosage. And you mash the button for more. The ones I've used let you know with a happy ding when it's giving you a hit after you press the button. But if you're maxed out -- i.e. you've reached your doctor-imposed limit in a given time period -- it makes a different unhappy sound to let you know you're mashing the button in vain.

After a button press the euphoria arrives in mere seconds -- faster than even sublingual Kentucky bourbon.

What do you think of the doctor-imposed limit -- any opinion? I'm sure they have to be very careful with such things.

Strongly in favor of the limit! Lots of patients would OD and some would kill themselves if no limit. Pain -- along with the cognitive impairment that the narcotic causes -- would inevitably lead to that.

They load the machine with a huge syringe full of the narcotic. A computer-controlled motor (typically a stepper motor) drives a leadscrew that pushes the plunger of the syringe in a little when you mash the button. The syringe contains so much medicine that the patient would certainly OD and probably die if administered in too short a time.

The design standards and reliability testing that gov imposes for the qualification of medical equipment are pretty strait and severe. Electronic parts manufacturers have long disclaimed "Our parts are not to be used in life support equipment without the express approval of the CEO..." or some such.

Several years ago I designed a timer for a client -- programmable frequency, duty cycle, and run time. Then he told me it was going to be used to control a device used for physical therapy. I told him that in order to use it for a medical device he would have to jump through a lot of hoops, need lawyers, etc. He said don't worry, it's not going to be used in the United States.

You can read about the x-ray machine that killed one or more patients several years ago because the engineer muffed the programming of the computer chip. Turned out that if the x-ray tech happened to hit [backspace] when entering the patient's name, the machine subsequently malfunctioned, administering a fatal dose of radiation.

If you'd had the little nurse I had up in Ohio several few years ago, you'd have been ringing for her even when you weren't in pain.

My mother, a retired RN who taught nursing most of her career, told the girl "Young lady, you shouldn't be working in a critical care heart ward."

Heather, knowing that my mother had taught nursing, was taken aback. "Uh, why not, ma'am?"

"Because you're liable to give half the male patients a heart attack!"
