A MACHINE that generates clean power by replicating our sun could secure the world’s long-term energy future.

The Back To The Future-style fusion reactor runs purely on seawater and involves no harmful waste.

NINTCHDBPICT000710627117 2 JET have unveiled their fusion reactor which generates clean power by replicating our sun The latest trials resulted in the process producing 59 megajoules of sustained energy, enough to boil 60 kettles in just five seconds.

That is more than double what was achieved in similar tests in 1997.

Now experts, with the world currently battling an energy crisis, believe the procedure will mean the end of the need to rely on oil and gas.

It is also being heralded as the answer to combating climate change.

Scientists at the Joint European Torus (JET) laboratory, based near Oxford, have been working since the 1980s on the process.

Unlike a nuclear power station, which splits atoms, this system squeezes together two forms of hydrogen — deuterium and tritium — until they “fuse”.

This creates a super-hot ball of energy that resembles the sun.It is similar to the Mr Fusion generator that powers Marty McFly’s flying DeLorean time-machine in the Back To The Future movies, though that one was fuelled by garbage.

Prof Ian Chapman, boss of UK Atomic Energy Authority which is leading the project, said: “Fusion is the root source of the power of the sun.

“We have been trying for a long time to recreate that power.

“This machine is an experiment but we are very close to proving it can work on a bigger scale.

“Fusion is a massive part of our battle against climate change — and this creates virtually carbon-free power.

He explained a bath full of water contains enough energy to supply one person’s power needs for life.

Hotter than sun The JET fusion reactor heats its fuel to about 150 million degrees — around ten times hotter than the sun.

Because it is so hot, the fuel cannot touch anything in the reactor, so it is levitated by magnets.

Prof Chapman added: “What we see in the reactor is a pink-ish ball of ethereal, sparkling energy floating in mid-air — quite magical.”

He claimed the reactor could help the world reach its Net Zero target by 2050 — if properly funded.

He said: “We’re aiming at 2040 for a prototype but things can be accelerated.”

Science minister George Freeman said: “We know how urgently we need sustainable energy. This is a part of the answer.

“These extraordinary scientists have demonstrated that fusion power is not just legitimate it is within grasp.”

I want to believe it. Expert opinion please.

I don't know much about nuclear fusion, so I can't comment authoritatively on that aspect. But whoever wrote this article doesn't seem to know the difference between power and energy. "Sustained energy" is not a meaningful concept. I want to know how much power this machine produces, and how long it can sustain that power. Power is energy per unit of time. 59 megajoules (MJ) of energy is a lot of energy, but we're not told how long it takes this machine to produce that much energy. If it takes an hour to produce that 59 MJ, then that's a power output 16.4 kilowatts -- enough to power a good sized house. But if it produces that 59 MJ in only 5 seconds -- the only time period mentioned in the article -- then that's a power output of 11.8 megawatts -- 720 times higher.

Summary: It's hard to trust a technical (or any other kind of) article written by somebody who doesn't know what he (or she) is talking about.

Despite having grown cynical about reported energy breakthroughs, I hope this one's real. But how will it ever get past the oil barons and their friends in DC?

The same billionaires and corporations who own the oil wells will end up also owning any newly developed major energy source.

They're going to stop killing the inventors and sitting on the patents? Or is all that conspiracy theory.

Oh, I'm sure they'll keep doing that, too.
