I expect anyone calling him a murderer before acquittal will be harder to sue as, though involuntary, Rittenhouse became a public figure. But it may depend on the depth to which people stooped and the amount of defamation doled out. But claims after acquittal should get Rittenhouse an easy big buck settlement.

Kyle Rittenhouse to Sue “Politicians, Celebrities, Athletes," Launch Foundation to Hold Media Accountable Photo by Gage Skidmore Photo by Gage Skidmore — Creative Commons Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted of all charges stemming from a Kenosha shooting in 2020, announced his plans to sue for defamation those who labeled him a murderer and a white supremacist. During an interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson, the 19-year-old said , “We are looking at quite a few politicians, celebrities, athletes, Whoopi Goldberg is on the list. She called me a murderer after I was acquitted by a jury of my peers.” Rittenhouse also mentioned Cenk Uygur from The Young Turks as a potential target of legal action for continuing to call him a murderer after jurors found him not guilty.

Rittenhouse also plans to create a foundation, The Media Accountability Project, as “the official fundraising vehicle for holding the worst offenders in our activist media accountable in court.”

“In the long term, I want to provide a platform for independent journalists who are actually committed to the truth, but for right now, accountability is priority No. 1.”
