Proving that Mehitable Storm is an equal opportunity gadfly, I have now been banned from posting on both Free Republic and Daily Kos. Now how, you may ask, was I banned from such a bastion of free speech as Daily Kos? Well, I dared to tell Michael Schiavo - yes, THAT Michael Schiavo - that he killed his wife and should rot in hell. Perhaps an indelicate thing to say, but - I believe it. Next thing I know, I'm being flamed and I can't answer back.

So I wrote an email to the DK people asking them what the hell freedom of speech was to them and how they differ from Free Republic.

This just makes me appreciate "4" all the more :)

Michael Schiavo

I've despised that fuck from the first day I saw him. He chills me. I concur; May he rot in hell.

For me, JT, there are 2 issues. There's an issue of what should happen to comatose people. That's one issue and reasonable people might disagree.

And then, there's Michael Schiavo. Everything I've read and heard about him all through that controversy marked him as an abusive and despicable person in every conceivable light. He's just evil. I think he tried to kill his wife and that's why she ended up in the situation she was in. And then once he got the settlement money, he basically deserted her and tried to prevent her from getting any kind of assistance that would help her. He's truly a vile and evil man, who works with other vile and evil men down there in Florida to subvert justice. To me, I'm looking at this individual case -not the case of every person who is in some kind of vegetative state. Nor is it a religious issue with me particularly, although I definitely understand that point of view.

But this guy seems to have - for whatever reason - a lot of power. I note that there is not a SINGLE critical post of him on his diary at DK and that does not seem possible considering the controversy surrounding the case. They're obviously keeping off anyone with any alternative point of view and SHAME on them for presenting themselves as any kind of advocate for freedom of speech because THEY LIE. Just like FR.

It's more complicated than that. I don't want to re-argue the whole case, but as I say - there are 2 parts to it for me. We could discuss what to do with vegetative people - that's one aspect. However, Michael Schiavo's personal behavior from day one - and I mmean going back years on this case - has been absolutely despicable. He's an evil man. That's a separate issue from the whole vegetative thing. I think he caused his wife to BE in that condition in the first place and no investigation was done...because that's life in Florida, apparently.

Hell, I might be the only person banned from DK for all I know, but I'm really sad to see that their stand on free speech is just a pose with no substance. They have their pet issues and positions too, just like FR, and they're just as rigid. I hate hypocrisy and I tend to be....blunt.

Yes they are as rigid as much as they hate FR it's FR two down to asking posters to 'freep' polls.. When some post things re 9/11 it's the same thing.. they are called tinfoilers and also threatened with banning.

His conduct was despicable.

Although under the law the decision was his alone and I agree with that legal principle, he should have considered her family's feelings and how flint-hearted his decision was.

FYI, it was that case that finally forced me to order and wear my Medicalert necklace that reads "NO CODE-DO NOT RESUSCITATE".

In general, I agree with you, but I've seen that when I've posted anything that varied from the liberal dogma, I'd get troll-rated or flamed. Most of my posts are anti-Bush which they love, but God forbid you make any comments about immigration, or anything that doesn't toe the liberal line - you'll either get flamed, or banned as I did. It might be a function of the admin moderator more than Kos himself, as sometimes the mods have a lot of power on these boards and if one of them has a particular passion for Michael Schiavo, which seems to be the case considering that all the comments were glowingly positive - well they can just dump you,and whatcha gonna do about it? There should be a review process on some of these forums for banning as I think they sometimes just reflect the bias of the moderator at the moment.

I'm just lucky to have found a place like 4 with such consistently intelligent, independent thinkers. I'm kind of shocked at the lock-step thinking that exists on other forums, and how they all rush to defend their own orthodoxy and slam every one else's. The hypocrisy is amazing.

Well, I dared to tell Michael Schiavo - yes, THAT Michael Schiavo - that he killed his wife and should rot in hell. Perhaps an indelicate thing to say, but - I believe it.

Look guy, Terri was already dead. Calling her husband who loved her a murderer is totally over the line. I have asked my daughter to have the plug pulled if I am braindead, and Terri was braindead. The autopsy proved it. Even the right wing thugs are running away from this, and the Repukes are going to get killed in Florida for this farce.

Wanna get banned here, probably the most open-minded forum on the web (apart from Flintlock, that crazy old coot)? Start saying that we are traitors who don't worship at the feet of the great bush.

If you keep throwing discredited crap at people, they WILL ban you. Terri was dead. Get used to it. The autopsy proved it and even that moron Bush backed off.

Mekons4  posted on  2006-05-12   22:42:16 ET  Reply   Trace   Private Reply

Nonsense Mekons, I don't think anyone has been banned here. If it has ever happened, it's EXTREMELY rare. You're proof of that. Why haven't YOU been banned yet? You disagree with most of us on a lot of things. Not that I think you should be banned - I don't.

As for Terri Schiavo, you obviously don't know anything about the case. Nor have you read my prior remarks earlier in this thread. As I say - there are 2 issues in this case. The first is what to do with vegetative people. We can discuss or argue this issue and reasonable people can disagree.

The second issue is Michael Schiavo and his behavior. I believe firmly that his wife's condition resulted from something Schiavo did that night she collapsed. There is NO other explanation for her collapse. Nothing that sounds remotely reasonable. Moreover, once he finally received the settlement money for Terri, he stopped allowing her to have any kind of treatment even to the most innocent and benign things. He tormented her family by not allowing them access to Terri. In fact, the tormented them right to the end. He was seen by more than one nurse at the facility doing and saying highly suspicious things. What kind of loving husband visits his invalided wife and rages publicly about "that bitch" not being dead yet. Very nice.

As for Terri's end - I hope you never have to go through the agony of having all water and sustenance withheld from you for two weeks so you die of thirst. It's a horrible death and something only a truly evil person could even contemplate. If you approve of this, then you must be like Schiavo. It's one thing to pull a plug, it's another to dehydrate a living being for two weeks. If you did that to a dog, you would be put in jail.

Michael Schiavo is a total piece of shit. He is a profoundly evil and vile person and I"m glad I got the opportunity to tell him what I think of him. I only wish I could have done it to his filthy face. I believe he is a wife abuser and ultimately a wife killer. And I have no patience with the weak minded morons who try to sanctify this creature.

That's funny. I always describe myself as a moderate - which I did on both forums. I think a big part of the problem in our political scene is that we have 2 extremes of the left and right dominating all political debate. The reality is that most of us are somewhere in the middle - we conservative on some positions and liberal on others. We think them out and come to conclusions. I don't see how our political system can survive the current climate of extremism. I believe the truth is usually in the middle.

You are the one who doesn't know about the case. Show me a link other than to some wingnut site that says he called her a bitch. And even if he did beat her to death, which is absolutely untrue, she had a stroke, what does that have to do with keeping a vegetable alive? I want to be let go if I'm EVER in that shape, and the disgraceful conduct of Frist and Bush and the rest, knowing nothing, who turned this into a circus is a total embarassment.

Do you seriously think an alligator brain is reason to live? That's all she had. Period.

Mekons4  posted on  2006-05-13   1:56:34 ET  Reply   Trace   Private Reply

I repeat. You obviously know nothing about the case. It's far more complicated than your simple statements. You can deny whatever you want on Schiavo's behalf, it doesn't matter. The evidence is out there for whomever wants to investigate.

That said, the problem with this issue is that it is TWO ISSUES. The Schiavo case was the worst possible case for discussing the issue of how to handle vegetative people as it is such a complicated case with such an unsavoury taint to it because of Michael Schiavo. It's one thing to talk about someone who has been in a car accident or had an obvious stroke and is only being held to life with a machine. I don't have any problem myself with unplugging that person. It's another thing when you have a man under serious suspicion - and who openly lied on the witness stand about his behavior the night of Terri's collapse - of harming his wife and creating this situation in the FIRST PLACE. Then you have the issue of the money and what was done with it. Then you have the debate about Terri's condition over the course of years and what kind of treatment she could have received or was denied. Then you have the fight between the husband and the family. Then you have the statements of nursing personnel at the home about Schiavo's words and behavior. Then you have the behavior of his lawyer and Florida officials involved in the case and whether there was a variety of conflicts of interest. Yet again, you have the obviously tainted motive of Schiavo who has what amounted to a new wife and children. On top of that you have the horrible death of Terri that he brought about.

This is not a simple, clear cut case. It is anything BUT THAT. Schiavo is the worst possible representative that anyone could pick for the concept of not continuing a vegetative life, or unplugging a comatose person. And that is the problem - it's not just the base issue. It's Schiavo himself - specifically.
