This brings to mind the Hunt brothers trying to corner the silver market using borrowed money. The lost their shirts just like the Chinese tycoon. ;)

The Chinese tycoon was shorting the market betting that nickel would level off. The Hunt brothers were going long when their contracts were cancelled by insiders who had bet silver would not get over $40 an ounce. If they had not cancelled their contracts, the Hunt brothers would have broken the market.
