AP: Brent Renaud, an acclaimed filmmaker who traveled to some of the darkest and most dangerous corners of the world for documentaries that transported audiences to little-known places of suffering, died Sunday after Russian forces opened fire on his vehicle in Ukraine. The 50-year-old Little Rock, Arkansas, native was gathering material for a report about refugees when his vehicle was hit at a checkpoint in Irpin, just outside the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said the area has sustained intense shelling by Russian forces in recent days. Renaud was one of the most respected independent producers of his era, said Christof Putzel, a filmmaker and close friend who had received a text from Renaud just three days before his death. Renaud and Putzel won a 2013 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University journalism award for “Arming the Mexican Cartels,” a documentary on how guns trafficked from the United States fueled rampant drug gang violence. “This guy was the absolute best,” Putzel told The Associated Press via phone from New York City. “He was just the absolute best war journalist that I know. This is a guy who literally went to every conflict zone.” Presumably, whatever car they were traveling in was marked “press.” I would go so far as to say the Ukrainian assassins knew that he was well-known, so it has more of an impact in their propaganda war. I think you’re going to see more of these press shootings, and I am just going to assume that it is the Ukrainians doing it. You absolutely cannot trust any information coming out of the Ukraine, at all, but we know that virtually everything the West has claimed has been false. Why should I believe the people who sold me the Ghost of Kiev? It’s simply Occam’s Razor that the Ukrainians would be the ones killing journalists. I doubt they'd report his death if he was still alive, as reporters tend to be noticed by the public as long as they are reporting. Maybe he decided to retire from public life with a bang but I can believe the guy is dead. Running around in a war zone will get anyone killed. There are all manner of scenarios where he could have been killed by a stray mortar shell or shot where he was not the intended target or mistaken for a combatant or other potential threat such as a car bomber. Could easily be propaganda but so is 80% of all reports from the region, so whatever the circumstances of his death, it's not really news.
The question is not whether he is dead but who fired the shot.
