Israel/Zionism See other Israel/Zionism Articles Title: Arrest Of Rabbi Hired By Russian Oligarch To Create Fake Sephardic Ancestry Exposes Myths Of Jewish Identity (The Jewish Chronicle) A Rabbi who helped Jewish-Russian oligarch, Roman Abramovich, “prove” he had Sephardi ancestry in order to acquire Portuguese citizenship has been told he cannot leave Portugal until the investigation into the scandal is completed: Rabbi Daniel Litvak was arrested late last week as he attempted to leave Porto for Israel. Mr Litvak has previously defended the assessment of Abramovich’s genealogy despite it being incredibly uncommon for Russian Jews to have Sephardi backgrounds. Portuguese police said on Friday that the investigation was focusing on allegations of money laundering, corruption, fraud and falsification of documents in the process of granting citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews. The Jewish community in Porto has refuted the allegations of fraud and said that they had been unfairly smeared. The investigation into Mr Abramovich’s citizenship was launched in January of this year and at the time, a spokesperson for the Chelsea owner said that they “welcome any review as it will only demonstrate the citizenship was obtained in accordance with the rules”. The oligarch is believed to have taken advantage of a Portuguese law that gives naturalisation rights to descendants of Jews that were hounded out of both Spain and Portugal during the Inquisition of the late 1400s. In a statement to Reuters, the Justice ministry maintained that it was a routine procedure, saying: “It is a normal procedure adopted whenever there are situations or news that refer to any possible irregularity in the procedure carried out.” Sure, it’s a “routine” procedure to arrest rabbis who fabricate genealogies used to claim Portuguese citizenship — so “routine” that you will have trouble finding another example. In reality, more than two-thirds — or 66% — of all Jews applying for Portuguese citizenship under this program are Israeli — not from Latin America, as one might expect, considering that’s where most of the Sephardic Jews went after being expelled from Portugal and Spain. The ones that didn’t go to the New World fled to Amsterdam and Turkey — while a small number went across the border into southern France to live among the Huguenots. It’s no secret that Jews like to have as many passports as possible — which allows them the most freedom of movement — history shows us that often Jews have found themselves having to leave a country at a moment’s notice, of course through no fault of their own. Many countries in the European Union now offer citizenship to Jews whose ancestors were forced to leave because of “Nazi” persecution during WWII — in fact, Jews in England are allowed to hold up to three different passports. That said, the most important take-away from this article on Abramovich is that it correctly points out that Russian Jews — that is, Ashkenazi Jews — do not have Sephardic ancestry. This makes perfect sense because — despite both groups calling themselves “Jews,” Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews are not the same people and don’t have a common ancestry leading back to the Israelites of the Bible.
