I had to look up the lyrics her to be sure I hadn't mis-heard the first line.

It really does end with the word "American" which to my ear is not an antecedent to the following where-clause.

Don't know if it's good song writing or not, but I might say,"I'm proud to be from America where at least I know I'm free . . ."

Do you find those lyrics at all jarring, NN?

BTW, "where at least I know I'm free" sounds stupid all by itself for obvious reasons I won't belabor you with.

I, too, always hated that stupid "where" following "American". It gets even worse with the "And I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me." What, the right to know you're free?
