What Would We Do If All The Illegal Immigrants Left?

Donna Poisl May 13, 2006

There are several proposals for immigration reform being discussed now. Each one says it will solve the problem of so many illegal immigrants coming to and staying in this country. Some are offering amnesty, others guest worker cards, others temporary cards.

Some people are talking about rounding them up and sending them all "back to where ever they came from".

How would we do that? First, how would we find all of them? If we were able to find them, who would do the processing and paperwork to organize the deportation? Would we hire planes and buses and buy them tickets to go home? Where would we keep them until we sent them home? It would be impossible and also impossibly expensive to do this for the millions who are here, some for many years.

If the roads were filled with buses and the skies with planes taking all these people out of this country, what would happen then? Who would do the work they were doing here? There would be a huge shortage of workers for farming, construction, landscaping, restaurants and tourism. Last season, growers could not get enough workers to harvest their crops and this year is worse. Prices of everything would rise dramatically and some produce would not be available at all, because it would be rotting in the fields.

These people take jobs that most other residents won’t take. The pay is low, the hours are long, the work is very hard and often dangerous, the benefits are non-existent. They often are housed in bunkhouses or sharing trailers, away from their families, living in conditions few of us would tolerate. Assuming they make about $7.00 an hour, what would the wage have to be raised to for any of us to accept the work and conditions? $15? $25? If growers had to pay two or three or four times the present wage just to harvest, how much would lettuce and apples and tomatoes cost in the stores?

If landscaping companies, contractors and restaurants had to pay top wages to get the work done, how much would we have to pay to buy or repair a house or get the lawn cut or buy a meal? If motel and hotel maids and janitors were paid more, would we be able to afford a room?

If these workers were allowed to work legally, with a guest worker card or temporary worker visa, or whatever the different proposals call them, they would be paying their fair share of taxes. Paying the minimum wage or the prevailing wage would probably raise prices a little, but not as much as raising wages so the rest of us would do the work. An added bonus might be discovering that some of these workers are highly educated and skilled and are taking these manual labor jobs because they can’t legally get a better job.

If companies can’t find enough workers who are here legally, they should be able to offer these jobs to others willing and able to do them. But these people should have some type of document; they have to be paying taxes, have to be able to work and live safely, have to be able to be located when the immigration department wants to know where they are.

Undocumented workers are exploited by unscrupulous employers. They are exploited precisely because they are undocumented. These employers know they can do almost anything to them and won’t be reported. If these employers were forced to follow the laws, it would help solve the problem.

If people absolutely needed these worker visas to work here, the ones who are crossing the border illegally would probably stop coming. It would be impossible to send all the illegal people back home now, we have to find a better way to deal with this problem.

We beg for immigration reform and complain about illegal immigrants, but are we willing to pay more for almost everything we need and use in our lives if they are deported? Could we afford to live here if they all went home?

Hmmm...I'd feel a little safer on the highways; I'd worry less about the diseases the people preparaing my food might be carrying; I'd see less public urination and defecation; I wouldn't have to wait in long lines at the DMV; I'd save money on Veggie-Wash; I'd mow my own lawn and pick my own fruits and veggies; I'll continue to make my OWN salsa; I would be able to get from 'Point A' to 'Point B' without my way being restricted by illegals demonstrating for their 'rights'; I'd spend less time waitng for service in the ER; I'd be able to order fast food in English...gosh; I'm not sure how I would get by without them.

Not much more than we pay now. Of course; grocers WOULD triple the price, blame it on wage earners, and get away with it, because the average American is too damn stupid to run the math.

I personally don't know anyone who wants to simply get rid of all immigrants. This is a lie the globalists are trying to push to color the argument, and it's really evil lie as it's a slander against the American people as well as a distortion of the truth.

We've had immigrants since we were founded. So do many other countries around the world. However, what we no longer have in practice is a procedure for determining how many immigrants we want or need, what kinds of skills do we want them to bring, what their economic status should be and what kinds of health problems should we be screening for. Moreover, actual immigrants to the US should be willing to learn English and foreswear their allegiance to the former country and just become Americans. Beyond that we have the simple security issue of protecting our own borders and determining who comes across for what reason.

This is no different (in theory) from any other civilized country on earth, INCLUDING Mexico, which has stringent immigration standards. Other countries will screen potential immigrants for health, economic status, age (they don't want elderly people just coming and using their social services), skill sets or work background and possibly other criteria as well. Sometimes you have to have a certain basic amount of money to come into a country, such as $5000. You also have to prove your identity.

We are requiring NONE of this from any of these illegals, and how can we? THEY"RE HERE ILLEGALLY. If we need more people to do more kinds of work, we can up the immigration quota while maintaining other standards of health and security.

I get particularly annoyed by these lies about how much a head of lettuce costs. The price we are paying at the grocery store IS NOT the actual cost of growing a head of lettuce. It's the company's cost plus their profit. It does not include all the risks that the tax payers take on that the corporation does not - providing health benefits, housing, education, transportation, social services and sometimes incarceration to these workers. The companies get the gravy and we get the giblets.

First, I'd be able to order fast food in English.

Second, I wouldn't watch neighborhoods become Barrios.

Third, Crime would drop.

Fourth, My taxes would stay the same because the fucking government can't seem to cut spending.

Fifth, test scores would go up, and kids would learn more in our school systems.

Sixth, My health insurance costs would be lower because the hospitals wouldn't be losing money treating non-paying illegal aliens.

Seventh, My car insurance would go down, because there'd be less chance of me being hit by an uninsured illegal alien motorist.

Eighth, Diseases such as Anti-biotic resistant Tuberculosis, among others wouldn't be entering the country from the south.

Ninth, Our prisons would be One third emptier which would make room for White Collar Criminals such as the piece of shit politicians who have been fucking the American People.

Tenth, Teenagers would be able to get some summer work instead of hanging out at the fucking mall being a nuisance.

Eleventh, Drugs and street gangs would be dramatically reduced. I suppose that would fall under crime, but this is another deal entirely.

Feel free to add to the list folks.

What's that Mr. Nipples? You want me to ask the nice lady about her rack?.

The pay is low and the benefits non-existant precicely because their are illegal foreign born people willing to do it. If one flooded the American market with $0.25 cent cost gasoline, it would be $0.35 at the pump. Same goes for labor, flood the market with cheap, prices get depressed...

The "head of lettuce to $5.00" arguement is weak too, it would actually raise the price, in a direct cost pass through, by something like $0.11/head to pay the people ~$15.00 an hour and give them benefits, which people would get if there weren't legions of them walking over the border to do it for roughly a quarter of that...

"To wield onself -- to use oneself as a tool in one's own hand -- and so to make or break that which no one else can build or ruin -- THAT is the greatest pleasure known to man! To one who has felt the chisel in his hand and set free the angel prisoned in the marble block, or to one who has felt sword in hand and set homeless the soul that a moment before lived in the body of his mortal enemy -- to those both come alike the taste of that rare food spread only for demons or for gods." -- Gordon R. Number 12: Wages would go up as employers would be forced to offer attractive wages for jobs that used to pay a living wage but no longer do. Innovation in production technologies would also be stimulated, since employers being deprived of slave labor would have increased incentive for seeking out, purchasing and implementing advanced automation technologies. Jobs would be created in those enterprises devoted to developing those advanced automation technologies, allowing for new career opportunities for those inclined to pursue said careers.

In re construction: my father owned a construction company and I've built many a house. The idea that houses wouldn't be built or repaired without wetbacks is utter nonsense. Instead of webacks, white guys would do it, just as they did before, and do now.
