There will always be all the gasoline and diesel you can buy, provided there are no price controls. That doesn't imply that prices will not increase. However, even if diesel is $20 per gallon, as long as there are no price controls, if you have the money, you can buy it.

even if diesel is $20 per gallon

Diesel fuel is cheaper to make than gasoline. But diesel is more expensive. The reason for that is because truckers need it. ;)

I always wondered why that is, I mean it's not as refined as gasoline, right so it should cost less to make.

In recent years, the federal government has mandated changes to the acceptable sulfur level of diesel fuel, and refiners must comply with these mandates to create an ultra low sulfur diesel fuel product. This means significant investments in new technology and several distillations before the finished fuel is deemed acceptable by government inspectors. All of these additional regulations and high-tech equipment can cost billions of dollars, and these expenses are often passed onto consumers through higher prices.

There are also higher federal excise taxes placed on diesel fuel compared to standard gasoline. Some critics suggest the federal government is less eager to impose higher taxes on millions of private drivers than thousands of commercial drivers who use a less popular fuel. Part of the reason diesel fuel is more expensive than gas is the total amount of federal and state taxes added to each gallon.

federal and state taxes

It is the excise taxes that are the real killer. When we did dedicated run to Florida we would squeeze as much fuel into the tanks as possible before we left Lake Park Flying J. The excise in Florida was so high we would try to get out of the state without buying fuel. The company would settle up when they paid quarterly IFTA taxes. I was out there a couple of times pumping the injectors when we sucked air. My co-driver run the tanks dry once right in middle of intersection. A cop pulled up and he told him, "What do you want me to do? It's out of fuel." We had to call for a service truck to come out. That was extra. :-/

That can't be if we truly have competition and they are both made from the same product and can be produced in whatever ratio and in the same quantities the companies choose. It that was the case, companies would start making more diesel and less gasoline until the price of diesel can down, or the price of gasoline increased, or both. They would make gasoline and diesel in whatever ratios gave them the most profit.

That can't be

Are you aware that truckers NEED diesel fuel for their trucks and also for the reefer trailers that cool refrigerated and frozen foods?

One of the local truck stops here had new concrete put in after many years of diesel spills had eaten up the concrete. If they had any sense, they would have sealed the new concrete with anti-spalling compound that is used up north to seal bridge walls and footings that rocker bearings are mounted on. They discovered that the brine from salting the bridges had run in there and the concrete was deteriorating.

Cleaning bridge bearings was one of our duties when we did highway maintenance. We would use aluminized paint to paint the bearings. The sealing of the concrete occurred after the bearings were painted ;)

If you eat it, wear it or drive it, thank a trucker. ;)

diesel

When we worked for Illinois State Highways, one time when the Des Plaines River flooded very badly one of the guys was out with the Lead, Lead Worker in the crew cab. It had a diesel engine.

They were south of Palatine Rd where River Rd and Milwaukee Ave came together. They were going south, and the other guy was driving.

The Foreman told the guy driving to go to the left. He said, "But that's the deep water." He told the guy driving again to go left. He did, and the air horn for the diesel sucked up water. The diesel got hydro locked, and it cost them $10,000 to put in a new engine.

I don't think anyone was written up over that fiasco. ;)

It's not cheaper anymore thanks to EPA (Green New Dark Ages) regulations.

EPA rules have caused the refiners to install more equipment to remove sulfur from fuel. This is part of the reason for increased cost of diesel fuel. Large companies use company credit cards to fuel. Smaller outfits use cash and get a discount at the pumps. But truckers still need it most and that is the main reason it is higher priced.

If you eat it, wear it or drive it, thank a trucker. ;)
