Title: Biden Admin Reverses Trump Fuel Efficiency Rules, New Vehicles Must Average 49 Miles Per Gallon By 2026

The Biden administration announced on April 1 it is raising requirements for fuel efficiency, reversing a rollback by the Trump administration.

New vehicles sold in the United States will have to travel an average of at least 49 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026 under the new federal rules. The requirement would have been at 32 mpg if going by rules under the Trump administration.

Specifically, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said fuel efficiency requirements will increase by 8 percent annually for 2024 and 2025 model years, and 10 percent annually for model year 2026.

The Trump administration had in March 2020 rolled back fuel efficiency requirements to 1.5 percent annual increases through 2026. The Obama administration had required 5 percent annual increases.

The new regulation (pdf) marks a slightly bigger increase than the proposal outlined in August 2021 by the NHTSA in a joint rule-making process with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of efforts to improve gas mileage and reduce tailpipe pollution.

The EPA announced similar rules (pdf) in December 2021.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the new rule “means that American families will be able to drive further before they have to fill up, saving hundreds of dollars per year.”

NHTSA estimates (pdf) that under the rule, consumers could save $1,387 in fuel costs over the life of a vehicle. but the average cost of a new vehicle would also increase by almost that much—$1,087.

I give up. I'm going back to bed. I wonder why I even bother coming downstairs most days.

New cars should average 80 mpg, and haul at least 400 watts of amplifiers and speakers lest us stupid anglo fuckers decide to sleep during the crucial hours of 12am and 4am when sheet metal should be tossed into beds of pickup trucks per the great new social order!

If I was rhythm guitarist of Grateful Dead, band would probably ended sometime around fall 1964. :)

New Vehicles Must Average 49 Miles Per Gallon By 2026

That's not a goal, it's an end point. It's the end of personal transportation as we know it.

You couldn't bolt two mopeds together and make a top for it out of PVC pipe and a Harbor Freight 5x7 blue tarp and expect 50 MPG. Expecting the automakers to turn-on-a-dime and completely rethink and retool is just stupid, delusional thinking. They might as well have set the target at 4,900 MPG.

My last motorcycle, a Honda VF 1100/V65 Sabre, 1,100cc (1.1 liter) V4, wouldn't get 49 MPG. Those tiny Smart Cars only got into the high 30s MPG range I think.

I got news for you. Our overlords don't want us going very far anymore. This'll do it.

Thank God I'll be at the Bridge before then. freedom4um.com/cgi-bin/readart.cgi?ArtNum=260335

I really wanted a car to drive again before I die. I haven't had one since I was a kid. I've been relegated to trucks forever. I should lower my sights. What the hell, I haven't been able to get the food I want at the grocery for about four months or more now. I suppose owning a car I want was a pretty unrealistic expectation as the era of Bidet wears on.
