Mitt Romney (R-UT) with a cease and desist letter over his comment accusing her of “treasonous lies” regarding Russia and the war in Ukraine, demanding that he preserve evidence and stop making such claims or face potential litigation. Gabbard — a war veteran, Army Reserve officer, and former Democrat presidential candidate — announced on Wednesday afternoon that she and her attorney, Harmeet K. Dhillon, had sent out the cease-and-desist letter in response to a tweet posted by Romney that could potentially damage her reputation with what she says are baseless allegations. “When powerful, influential people make baseless accusations of treason, a crime punishable by death, in order to intimidate, silence and censor those who speak the truth, it has a chilling effect on our democracy. Her treasonous lies may well cost lives.” twitter.c om/MittRomney/status/1503113473819041796 The cease and desist letter sent by Dhillon advises Romney that: “Your accusation that Representative Gabbard, a combat veteran and current military officer, has engaged in ‘treasonous’ activity is completely false, a fact of which you were well aware when you made your claim. And as explained below, your accusation that Representative Gabbard lied also has no basis in fact.” “Your allegation that Representative Gabbard spoke ‘treasonous lies’ is clear-cut defamation,” Dhillon added. Romney’s slanderous tweet appeared to be a response to a video released by Gabbard discussing U.S.-funded biological laboratories in Ukraine. To that extent, Gabbard’s attorney noted that Romney’s accusation claiming the former congresswoman told lies is “false.” “In her video, Representative Gabbard made the factual claim that there were American-funded biological laboratories in Ukraine,” Dhillon said. “The existence of biological laboratories in Ukraine is beyond dispute,” the lawyer added before providing evidence for such a claim. According to Gabbard’s attorney, the former Democrat congresswoman would rather settle this issue outside of court, but she is not afraid to take that step if it is necessary. Romney has until April 27 to respond to the cease and desist letter. Dhillon also stated that Gabbard “will likely be forced to pursue litigation concerning this matter,” and that he should preserve all evidence related to the tweet in question as the law requires.
