PayPal has reversed its decision to withhold Consortium News‘ funds after a backlash from social media, news outlets and CN donors.

PayPal sent Consortium News an email on Tuesday night saying: “Your PayPal funds are now eligible for withdrawal.” CN immediately withdrew the funds. PayPal gave no reasons for its reversal, as it had given no reasons for its initial action. The account remains shut down, though it appears no longer permanently, as PayPal is asking CN to take steps to restore it without saying what those steps are.

PayPal initially said it had slapped a “permanent limitation” on Consortium News, adding explicitly: “You can’t use PayPal anymore. … We noticed activity in your account that’s inconsistent with our User Agreement and we no longer offer you PayPal services. … Because of potential risk exposure, we’ve permanently limited your account. You’ll no longer be able to use the account for any transactions.”

Crypto, baby, Crypto. These institutions can't play Big Brother like that with crypto.

Set up a PayPal like system where people do not have to own crypto if they want to donate.

I read Paypal lets you buy crypto but haven't seen any built-in support for that. It gave me the impression they just let you spend paypal funds to get crypto from vendors.

There's almost nothing I can buy with paypal except skype calls and domain name renewals. And I can't cash it out either so I'd welcome converting it to crypto.

There was a typo in my reply. I meant to say set up a PayPal like system. Get another vendor who will deliver to someone in crypto.

What I really want to know is there a way to donate thousands of dollars without the donor having to buy a crypto? Can he go through an exchange?

Like a gofundme, but with crypto?

If someone will donate crypto, they gotta buy some first. Certainly one could buy crypto from somewhere (and exchange) and for the deposit address that the crypto is put in, they could simply provide the deposit addr of the party that is in need. In that case, no wallet is required for the person buying the crypto.
