Lowell has long been one of the top performing public schools in the country...
Poster Comment:
Lowell and George Washington were the tow best schools in the state. Washington consistently won the competition for the highest GPA of students admitted to UC Berkeley. Lowell was wealthier and sent their students to Stanford which still has a lower academic ranking. But at that time fewer than 10% were Black and fewer than that were Asian. And even fewer Jews than Asians. But that was before the Vietnam War and drugs and DC based rules ruined public education. My reading list for World Litt, a one semester class, included:
Aristotle's Poetics, Plato the Symposium and the Cave, Sophocles, the Oedipus cycle (3 plays). Then on to Flaubert's Madam Bovary, Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, Melville's Billy Budd, followed by the plays, Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman. No public school would dare offer such a reading list today.
