NATO countries have significantly reduced their troops in recent decades. Cutting troop numbers bolsters the economy since military personnel are economically non-producing members of society. They do not manufacture things, nor do they provide services that add to the country's economic output, at least not in any direct manner.
Losing a war also harms the economy.
