Tora! Tora! Tora! is the Japanese signal to attack - and the movie meticulously recreates the attack on Pearl Harbor and the events leading up to it. Opening scenes contrast the American and Japanese positions. Japanese imperialists decide to stage the attack. Top U.S. brass ignore it's possibility. Intercepted Japanese messages warn of it - but never reach F.D.R.'s desk. Radar warnings are disregarded. Even the entrapment of a Japanese submarine in Pearl Harbor before the attack goes unreported. Ultimately the Day of Infamy arrives - in the most spectacular, gut-wrenching cavalcade of action-packed footage ever. You'll see moments of unsurpassed spectacle and heroism: U.S. fighters trying to take off and being hit as they taxi; men blasted from the decks of torpedoed ships while trying to rescue buddies; savage aerial dogfights pitting lone American fliers against squadrons of Imperial war planes. It's the most dazzling recreation of America's darkest day - and some of her finest hours.

Haven't watched it since I was a kid, and I now see YouTube has designated it unfit for kids. Go figure.

Presumably the movie does not include info about how our top brass knew the attack was coming, where and when, but didn't sound the alarm because they needed a surprise attack to shock the "America First" movement out of political existence in the USA, which had hampered the US entering the war sooner.

Winston Churchhill wrote that he slept better on the night of Dec 7th than any night since war broke out between England and Germany.

Yeah, I guess there is too much violence and bloodshed shown and our kids do need to be protected from that mayhem, even though it is simply depicted on the big screen.

That note was delivered to the White House under lock and key to Harry Hopkins. Hopkins did not have a key to the satchel. The movie does not say how long it took for FDR to get the bag and open it.

I'll bet Winston Churchill slept soundly that night. But by then it was already 1900 hours in London if those papers were served on Secretary Hull at 1400. ;)

No, no, no. I believe FDR and top officials knew everything weeks earlier. Keep in mind the Japanese diplomatic code had already been broken by the US. Their military code was unbroken until the following year, but not the diplomatic code.

They knew alright, and they let it happen to get us into the war with Japan.

Yamamoto was right. He feared all they had done was to awaken a sleeping giant. ;)

I think Yamamoto was truly a good guy.

Yamamoto

Yamamoto had attended University in the U.S.

When Japan proposed invading mainland America he told them, "It would be a bad idea. There would be a man with a rifle BEHIND EVERY BLADE OF GRASS." ;)

When the U.S declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on the U.S.

You can see how the axis between east and west was cemented. ;)
