Gold has been leased out, and those leasing it have sold it to others, effectively creating the illusion there is more gold in existence than there really is.

It is all smoke and mirrors. One of these fine days someone will be left holding the bag, and it will be empty.
Best thing to do is to hold the physical metal. The U.S. Mint is still producing the rounds and so are other countries like Canada and Australia. ;)
