If there's one thing I/we have learned in life, which I guess we can credit to the internet, it's that you shouldn't believe everything you hear. So much is staged. And while we wouldn't suspect it back in the day this show was on, it would in hindsight today seem at least very plausible if not very likely that all these humorous Hollywood answers were scripted in advance, with the questions intentionally designed to allow for double meanings.

Maybe so, but entertainers back then lived and made a living by their quick wits, not by reading off cue-cards or rehearsing. You may have missed the golden age of television, Johnny Carson and his guests, smoking, drinking, and having a great time while entertaining the entire nation.
