If you remember The Original Hollywood Squares and its comics, this will bring a tear to your eyes. These great questions and answers are from the days when game show responses were spontaneous and clever, not scripted and [often] dull as they are now. Peter Marshall was the host asking the questions, of course.

Q. As you grow older, do you tend to gesture more or less with your hands while talking? A. Rose Marie: You ask me one more growing old question Peter, and I'll give you a gesture you'll never forget.

Q. Paul, why do Hell's Angels wear leather? A. Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.

Q. Charley, you've just decided to grow strawberries. Are you going to get any during the first year? A. Charley Weaver: Of course not, I'm too busy growing strawberries.

If there's one thing I/we have learned in life, which I guess we can credit to the internet, it's that you shouldn't believe everything you hear. So much is staged. And while we wouldn't suspect it back in the day this show was on, it would in hindsight today seem at least very plausible if not very likely that all these humorous Hollywood answers were scripted in advance, with the questions intentionally designed to allow for double meanings.

Maybe so, but entertainers back then lived and made a living by their quick wits, not by reading off cue-cards or rehearsing.

You may have missed the golden age of television, Johnny Carson and his guests, smoking, drinking, and having a great time while entertaining the entire nation.

Not so sure about that. These were actors who were skilled at acting but they were handed scripts and their skill was in bringing those scripts to life which many back in the day definitely did so very, very well. The one exception to that who definitely had spontaneous wit was Robbin Williams. Jim Carrey may also qualify, as much as we can loathe his politics, but RW was the absolute all-time king, I would say.

Although Hollywood Squares is a legitimate game show, at its best the game is simply the background for the show's comedy. The show is scripted, in the sense that the panel of celebrities know the questions in advance and are provided with answers, and suggestions for bluffs and jokes. Typically, a celebrity's first response to a question is a(n attempt at a) humorous one. This is then followed by the true answer or bluff. It must be stressed that this does not mean the actual gameplay is scripted or predetermined, as the onus is still on the contestant to determine whether or not the provided answer to a question is the correct one.

The show's recurring and most successful celebrities have always been the ones with comic timing.
