An increase in raw dollar payouts in death benefits is probably significant, but it should be compared to the number of insured people there are for each year. An insurance company could have conceivably signed up substantially more customers during the pandemic in 2020, and that could account for some of the increase of payouts.

We could see that accounted for in the change of life insurance premiums the companies charge, assuming the premiums would float from one year to the next to reflect the statistical chance of a customer dying. But perhaps some life insurance plans don't allow for premiums to float like that.
