Russians have 3 premium assault groups. One is Group O, the Brave. One of their tank commanders is a great-grandson of a famous tank commander from WW II who has a statue in his honor in the town square back home. The second is Ahmad. They fought door to door in Mariupol. And the third is Wagner PMC. They are Russian speaking. One man was spotted with Iranian patches from the IRGC. And those rumors about Putin recruiting from prisons are not quite true. These men are prisoners but are joining the Wagner PMC (Private Military Contractors). Their group does assaults on fortified positions to dig out what is left after a brigade was hit by missiles and 6,500 artillery rounds a day for 10 days. They are infantrymen. It takes too long to train tank commanders. The Ukraine trained a pig farmer to become a tank commander. He injured his back when he drove his tank into a ditch. Not so in the Russian Army.
Wagner PMC fought for Russia in Syria as far back as 2015 that I know of. The head of Wagner PMC is a friend of Putin.
