Try as I might over the last weeks, news and commentary is not relevant to this forum.

No problem here, every ship has its course/mission

Now mind you, this is not an opus as I may post a "earth swallowed by a busty lesbian" article as need warrants.

I thank all of you for the consideration and kindness afforded to me at this venue.

Take care and tamp the ground before you.

See ya around.

It's been mentioned before that knowing how many times an article has been viewed might be helpful feedback. Would you see any value in that?

Neil, before you add that feature please look into the problem of searching on titles, it appears no search is taking place and the results prove it. Also, I think it would be a good feature to have an automatic search on the title of the article take place when previewing an article about to be posted. If there is a match then warn the poster that it appears this article was already posted. This would greatly cut down on duplicate articles being posted which is happening more and more since the title search doesn’t work properly anymore.

I did see that thread and tested it. Yes there's a problem. Searching on a single word seems to work fine, but multiple words seems to have incomplete results. I've not yet examined the code to see what's going on.

Searching on titles is certainly useful, but not particularly efficient for the computer as it is (or was) working. But that could be improved.

A dup article dectector is on the list. I've not done much with the software of late due to other duties, but I should get a number of things done before too long. A dup article detector would ideally be smart enough to detect similar titles, and the coding logic for that would be an interesting challenge.

If the case of checking for dup articles, I wonder if perhaps searching on the first 6 or so words of the article might be more effective.

Identical articles can have many different titles (AP is notorious for this) but usually the first paragraph of the articles are consistent.

What about cases where there's a Reuters version and an AP version of the same story? My current plan is to do something like compare the words with more than 3 or 4 letters. More than an 80% match would be a positive test result. Something like that.

I certainly don't expect people to be using the title search to look for dups.

Why not use the title search to look for duplicate items? Similar articles are not the same articles. Some reveal new information or updated information. I would think the title search would do for finding duplicate articles most of the time. Of course you would only have to search back for maybe one week from the present date, which would greatly improve the speed of the search I would think.

Well actually that won't be a duplicate article and I sort of like to see all versions of a story. AP, Reuters, AFP, etc.
