Ugh. This is supposed to get here late Thursday/Friday. Local WX says high Fri is supposed to be 2 with a low of 1. I got the snow blower staged and ready to go yesterday when it warmed up a little.

Last year it was so warm about that time, the gnats were swarming when I had company and ended up with a house full of gnats. Took until about mid Jan to get rid of them.

I'm about 120 mi ESE of the southern tip of lake Michigan.

I bet the stores are a mess today/tomorrow. Won't be a roll of TP or jug of milk to be found anywhere.

The forecasted low temps here (deg F) for the next six nights are 26, 11, 16, 19, 26, and 25!

Glad I got the wood stove and plenty of firewood.

And my gas-powered generator's running well (replaced the voltage regulator last week). We have well water, so when the electrical power goes out -- as it often does in winter -- we need the generator for water.

And I work from home, so no icy morning windshield to deal with.

Phinehas just texted me, she says the snow is starting up just east of Chicago. The temp here is 38, I'm gonna quick burn some burgers on my little electric Weber grill before it gets bad here. I wish I would've thought of that earlier, I would've set out one of those steaks I bought last week.

The rain/snowline is about 40 mi east of me. The radar looks like we might get black ice before it turns to all snow. Temps here should plummet about 1900EST. Latest forecast is calling for about 5", hard to tell what the wind is gonna do with that. This is gonna suck.

This never happened with Trump in charge.

Indy is right in the middle of it now, not much snow, winds powerful enough to upset a poorly rooted coconut palm. My biggest concern is all the rain from earlier is going to freeze, but I really don't give a shit, I've got enough supplies to last into middle of next week, then the cigs run out.

I was curious about how severe latest "artic vortex" really was, so I checked local weather across midwest. It looked like I could expect what Des Moines, IA was getting, they are down to -9. I usually check St Louis, but this storm is shaped like a water balloon being filled in Saskatchewan.

The rain has turned to snow, but FW WX is showing 33, so the black ice never happened and the ground is still too warm.

...then the cigs run out.

I've got about a week and a half worth and probably 15lbs of tobacco in the bottom of one of my deep-freezers and about 5,000 cigarette tubes and the stuffer for emergencies.

Was up way too early. Been bashing the Bidet and his freakshow for about 14 hours up and down the interwebs. Started drinkin' about noon:thirty.

I don't think we're going to get much snow, but the wind was fierce enough to blow about 1000 gum tree seed pods from next door onto my driveway. I'll refrain from calling 911...for now.

I can live with that. I might play that for the chicky-poos. Their panties melt over bad boys.

It seems the WX men might have been a wee bit hyperbolic. The radar is showing the trailing edge of "the storm of the century" between Plymouth and Warsaw already (50mi). Unless there's something behind it that I can't see or something developing, this event will end within the hour.

WX 39.5 WFWA is showing -8. When the weather gets uppity this way, the temp usually dips significantly just before sunrise, I might see -10 or below.

I looked out the side door of my garage, the handle and deadbolt had ice on them, the snow didn't look like much, I could see the top of the grass, but I can't see much from there. I didn't open the overhead door, temps this low don't play well with mechanical equipment. I'll go out later after I gear up and look around. It's not that important.

Last year it was so warm [on this day], the gnats were swarming when I had company and ended up with a house full of gnats.

I don't think that's going to be a problem this year. No gnats or company.

(Edit) It dropped to -9 at 0818, looks like only about an inch of snow, not really enough to drift much, the streets are snow covered. Winds are howling out of the west at 25mph & gusty.

That was "The Storm of a Generation." About the worst of it is the cold is really making the arthritis in my hands hurt pretty bad. I've notified WANE TV that I'll be holding a press conference at noon, 1700 Zulu to whine about my hands.

Lots of frozen pipes here -- upstairs where the pipes are exposed in the little triangular space outboard of the dormer walls. One small leak so far. Old copper pipes -- I hope I don't have to tear out any drywall to make repairs.

That sucks. I had a similar problem with that many years ago. I had to reroute the pipe inboard of that space.

Temp this morning was -2 high supposed to be 8. I'll bet the plumbers are busy here. Probably double time.

If you're thinking about using heat tape, don't use that crappy nichrome wire stuff, it's dangerous.

They make a semiconductor stuff now that's self regulating and doesn't mind crossovers. Even if a part of it burns out, the rest still works. I can't remember the brand name, but I got it at Wayne Pipe & Supply here in FW. It looks something like coax without the outer insulating jacket, but IIRC it has two center conductors. you can cut it to any length you need since it's not a continuous loop. I've got it encased in corrugated wire loom. They make special proprietary plugs for it and the terminus.

I used it to make heat for my garage pantry cabinets by clipping it to the back wall in a serpentine pattern. I have a snap disc type thermostat on it so it only comes on near freezing and shuts off at about 45. I don't remember the exact hysteresis of the t-stat.

I use the old resistive heat tape with built-in thermostat out in the pumphouse. A failure there wouldn't pose a danger to house or occupants. But now that you mention it, I probably wouldn't trust it inside -- or even under -- the house.

Never heard of the semiconductor cut-to-length type. Sounds interesting.

Sounds interesting.

It's pretty neat. It works like a strand of parallel resistors rather than a series loop. I probably built those cabinets 20 or so years ago and never had a problem. I just did a quick search. I think I used the Raychem brand. Looks like there's a lot of choices now. You might even be able to get it at a big box lumber yard now.

Thanks and Merry Christmas, you old Hoosier Hick.
