When my dad was a kid, he had to walk 7 miles to and from school in 4 feet of snow, at 14 degrees below zero, and uphill both ways.

Apparently we must be related because not only did my dad have to do that, but school was all year round and they had no holidays. Every day, you trudged through the snow. Even in summer. He then went on to tell me about how important school was. He dropped out of high school, became a criminal, went to prison, got his GED, and hated people who had an education. But, I still had to go to school. Regardless if there was a holiday or not. Whoa. I've never heard of the year-round school or no holiday thing -- I'll have to check with my dad on those. He'll probably remember those when I mention them. I doubt if his school had a playground.
