Yes, the problem is huge spending.
And how can you move out of that situation when prospective buyers of the home will see the tax bills they will need to pay?

You can't. You take the loss. In California, they exempt older property owners from new taxes. Thanks to Reagan supporters and the initiative process.

Yup.
Happened to us, in the Socialist state of Vermont. My parents' beautiful old house upon their passing (a house known and loved by many not even living in the state) sold for less than the total property taxes my father had paid in the last 30 years, less than a third of its value. New owners got a great deal on price, now also only pay less than a third of what my dad struggled to pay each year in taxes. Worked out great for the new owners, we the heirs, not so much.
