Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) this week waded into the debate over U.S. involvement in the war between Russia and Ukraine, saying further American entanglement in the war is not in the country’s “vital national interests.” “While the U.S. has many vital national interests — securing our borders, addressing the crisis of readiness within our military, achieving energy security and independence, and checking the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party — becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them,” DeSantis said in response to a Fox News questionnaire of potential 2024 presidential candidates. The remarks echoed criticism from some within the Republican Party about the level of funding the American government has offered to Ukraine, but also landed him squarely in the crosshairs of some GOP hawks.
