More than half a million kids could miss school next week because of a planned-three day strike from employees of the nation's second-largest school system, who are demanding higher wages due to rising inflation and housing costs.

The development comes as the latest round of negotiations between the Los Angeles Unified School District schools and a union representing 30,000 of its cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and other school staffers seemingly fell flat on Friday.

Called in hopes of averting a strike that would close more than 1,000 schools, the negotiations hit a standstill - even after assertions from Superintendent Alberto Carvalho that the district was prepared to improve its offer of three consecutive raises in the same amount of years to avoid any closures.

Poster Comment:

I would counter offer "we pay you what you are worth." If the kids can't read, you pay us. In the interim we declare an emergency and have parents teach the kids. No more TG crap.

The headline -- from the Daily Mail -- is inaccurate and misleading. The people planning to strike aren't really teachers; they're other school staffers. From the Service Employees International Union, Local 99—Education Workers United website:

We are teachers’ assistants, playground workers, special education assistants, bus drivers, gardeners, custodians, cafeteria workers, maintenance workers, early care and education workers, and others working in schools, colleges, family child care centers, and administrative offices. We are nearly 50,000 public and private sector education workers throughout Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Bernardino Counties.

When I was in school 50+ years ago, the lunch ladies and bus drivers were pretty good people. I know the teachers are overwhelming Marxist now (especially in California). I wonder if the lunch ladies are all freaks now, too? -- after all, they're hired by the same school system that hates children and their parents, and that hires perverted teachers to corrupt the children's minds.

We never had "playground workers". The teachers had to watch us. The gym teacher had to help a kid down from a tree one time, but I think almost any grown up could have done it. Probably would have come down on his own once he got hungry.

I said the lunch ladies were good people. I didn't say the food was any good. The kid in the tree would have get REALLY hungry before climbing down for cafeteria food.

Must not have had the little square pizzas where you went to school, we were dumb enough to stand in line for them.

I can't remember exactly when it was, maybe kindergarten, but they had a milk break sometime during the day and you had to pay three cents for the little carton.

I remember how cool it was if Mom didn't have the pennies and had to give me a nickel. That two cents in my pocket made me feel like Donald Trump.

I got kicked out of kindergarten after three days, so I don't remember if I ever got any milk there. But I do remember in-class milk in the 1st grade. And I remember the class marching down to the cafeteria for milk and crackers occasionally -- don't think it was every day -- in the 2nd or 3rd grade.

I don't remember ever paying for the milk or snack. Parents must have pre- paid?

I don't remember, Strait. I'm surprised I remembered the three cent thing. Lost a lot of memory in that stupid accident in 2013.

But not the ones I wish I could forget. The 40th Beirut anniversary is coming up this fall. Been gettin' shit wanting me to go. It's down in your 'hood somewhere at the Beirut Memorial. I'd rather go to my Dad's funeral at 14 again. You can go on my behalf.

The Beirut Memorial is way over in Eastern North Carolina almost to the coast. I'm close to North Georgia -- way way west of there.

Everything is too expensive, too heavy or too far away for me.

I guess I'm old.
