Interesting that Wallen, having lived in Knoxville, would refer to East Tennessee as "Eastern" Tennessee. I've spend a lot of time in Knoxville, and never heard anybody there say "Eastern" Tennessee. Ever.
The State of Tennessee officially defines and names the three regions of the state West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and East Tennessee. No erns trailing the West or East. (But just north of East Tennessee is Eastern Kentucky.)
As an aside, I live in the South Carolina Upcountry. That's what this region was called for hundreds of years until the carpetbaggers and scalawags decided that was too bucolic and too reminiscent of the Old South, so now everybody but me and a few friends calls it the Upstate.
Aside again, if somebody tells you he's from Indiana, he's probably NOT from Southern Indiana. Most of the folks in (or from) Southern Indiana call it Southern Indiana. But folks from Northern Indiana just say Indiana.
