They have had an Asian mayor. Now the mayor is a Jewish woman. Oakland became the first city in U.S. history to lose three professional major league sports teams to other cities within a span of five years. In 1980, Oakland's Black population reached its 20th-century peak at approximately 47% of the overall city population. The 2020 United States Census[89] reported that the racial makeup of Oakland was 156,429 (35.5%) White, 104,873 (23.8%) Black or African American, 68,300 (15.5%) Asian, 2,643 (0.6%) Pacific Islander, 3,965 (0.9%) Native American, and 30,404 (6.9%) multiracial (two or more races). There were 118,974 (27.0%) of Hispanic or Latino ancestry, of any race. I was born at the Alameda Naval Hospital in Oakland. The Oakland hills are full of wealthy Whites. The budget is stretched thin. Remember Rush Limbaugh? He read off a list of crimes Oakland police do not respond to. The police chief in Oakland, California, is warning that crime is "out of control" in the city after City Council members approved a budget cut stripping $17.4 million from the police department and directing the money elsewhere... Oakland’s police chief, miffed at recent budget cuts, has listed 44 crimes that his officers will no longer respond to. Robbery and theft are committed at shockingly high rates in Oakland, in fact, they are the highest in California. Many of the crimes committed in Oakland are gang related. Chief Anthony Batts released a list of situations police won't respond to that includes grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. Several of the lesser crimes include discarding an appliance with a lock, an unauthorized cable TV connection and a stolen license plate.
