I learned yesterday that a family member has decided to join the marines. I immediately called his mother (my cousin by marriage) and asked to speak with her husband. He's a firefighter and was at work, so she called him and had him call me. I told him that half of Gulf War One vets are disabled and over 8000 have already died, the Pentagon's own depleted uranium expert (Maj. Doug Rokke) is sick and half of his team (who went to Iraq to clean up) are dead, I told him that 67% of the babies born to one ALA National Guard unit after returning home have been stillborn and/or grotesquely deformed, that the boy may still change his mind and back out of his enlistment, an after pleading my case I felt that I got exactly nowhere. So, this morning I called my father-in-law and went through it again, and I asked him to GOOGLE a few things up. If anyone can get the boy to re-think his decision, my Dad-in-law can. Because the boy's dad is a firefighter (a govt employee) and is a "good, law abiding, tax paying citizen", he'll no doubt have some difficulty getting his mind around all the things I told him. And, as I explained to my father-in-law, if I don't succeed in snatching this young man away from The Crotch (marines) and he comes back sick or worse, then his parents will die of broken hearts because I tried to warn them. If I don't succeed then it would have been better if I'd kept my mouth shut! When I first explained the criminal federal reserve system and the income tax swindle many years ago, this large, Polish Catholic family thought that I was a communista subversio, but, fortunately many of them are now up to speed on that issue. (It took years and I don't have enough time to leisurely educate them about depleted uranium) I've never told the family the whole truth-that our govt is a criminal syndicate in open rebellion against the people and the constitution, and that our govt is killing and crippling more of our people than the enemy ever could. I saw no reason to tell them that there is no Easter bunny until one of ours expressed the intent to join up. Most of the family are life long conservative Dems and Dixiecrats, union members, state or municipal govt employees and contractors, and this means that the only way I could make my case was to piss on the altar. And piss I did! Like a racehorse on LASIX! My Dad in-law said that the recruiter promised the boy that he'd stay stateside, and the recruiter even put it in writing! I told Dad that it was only recently that a federal court (maybe the SCOTUS, I don't recall) ruled that recruiters may lie with impunity to recruits. Dad didn't know that! Okay, I scored a point! I said that all the boy has to do is tell the recruiter (who will threaten the boy when he tries to back out-I've been through this and beaten the recruiters before) that he isn't going, and to call the lying bastards' bluff!! The marines cannot forcibly induct a reluctant recruit on the strength of a civil contract! If they want to sue the kid for breach of contract, then they must first demonstrate that the contract was effected by consideration and it wasn't! And, even if it was, my answer is, "SUE US! Let's break that story on the national news and see how that impacts your recruitment goals!" (And, we haven't yet told the recruiter about how every time the kid handled a gun something strange happened! It was almost like he was possessed! And, because he did the most dangerous and unpredictable things with a .22 rifle, we resolved years ago to never let him handle any more firearms, especially powerful, rapid fire weapons! ;) In other words, the boy can still change his mind and save his own life. I can't save the world, but, I want to stop this kid from making the biggest mistake he'll ever make. Finally, I told both Dads that even if the boy gets lucky and serves his enlistment and never gets irradiated or shot or injured by equipment failure (imagine high school dropouts trying to maintain tilt-rotor V-22 Ospreys! Would you want your kid to fly in one that was serviced by a failed rapper?) and he returns home safe, he won't have any health benefits because BushCo has closed 7 VA Hospitals and is sending the loot for vets' health care to Halliburton! Please God, help me get through to this kid.

Oh gosh .. how horrible.. but one thing this does reveal is how little Americans really DO know.. even when information is out there .. I sure hope you're able to make him and his family realize what is going on.. hard to know and watch the people you care about getting ready to make a horrible mistake..

His mother who is my sister-in-law is a strong war-supporter. The recruiter told him that if he gets his college degree (he's in college now), then he'll be given kushy jobs.
I'm so sorry to hear this, Dawg. Good luck to you and I hope God puts some sense into this young man's mind. I think many of the people on this board share a common frustration because we're so much ahead of the general population (or even other forums) on so many issues and it's really hard to convince people of the truth when they've got a vested emotional interest in believing the govt's cock'n bull story. If you have a VA hospital near you, maybe you could take this young man visiting? The problem is that so many young people don't see the effects of war as this administration works so hard to hide the victims from our sight.

The others will torment him for enlisting on the strength of recruiter promises! He'll find himself in country, being shot at all day and laughed at all night. "You mean they told you that you were staying stateside, and YOU BELIEVED THEM? Man, you are one stupid bastard!" It'll be a nightmare! At best he'll return with serious psychological problems. No one should have to witness, never mind commit the atrocities that constitute democracy, neocon style.

If the kid goes in and my worst fears are realized, the family will suffer terribly because I dragged them from the darkness, but failed to successfully intervene.

Dawg, that's been man's lot since the fall from Eden. Don't feel bad about trying to educate people. Speaking the truth is always a good thing, even if it doesn't appear to be at the time.

Not only do we have a VA Hospital here (Elsmere DE) but it was the home of the DU PROJECT until the results weren't what The Pentagram wanted, so, they quickly and quietly closed it down! If the kid will sit down with me, I can probably smarten him up. Unfortunately, these wonderful Polish folks do share a cultural idiosyncracy, and that is stubbornness and reluctance to change. (It took them years to accept the idea that an intelligent person can have a Southern accent. And, they still won't eat grits with me.) And, because the family had already tried to change the kid's mind before I even knew, he has his defenses up and he may not listen to anyone now.
I would say to the kid do you really want to enter into a project or job or enterprise without most of the facts? Do you really want to go into it blind? Go the VA Hospital with me, take a look at these guys, listen to their stories (which might be yours someday) and then make up your mind. At least you'll be doing it on an informed basis and with a full awareness of the possibilities.

The "jackass" is my nephew by marriage and the same age as my youngest daughter. It's not so easy to dismiss my concerns this close to home. I know how this could hurt the family once Bush's war is personal...
Exactly what I told Dad this morning. If the kid is fully informed and makes a decision, fine. But, I submit that no one who is informed would join the marines now! The family didn't have any of the info I mentioned when they were trying to talk him out of it!

Excellent info, loddie, I've listened to Joyce for years, and her info really chills your blood. And Joyce is a former military nurse who dealt directly with these problems - I believe she was a Captain?

Most are kids.. and usually they look to these people as authority figures.. and dont realize that they are being lied to.. b/c they are taught NOT to challenge authority so the compliant kids are the ones that become the victims ..so to speak.
I started early on mine. They now understand Zionists Jews (Pharisees), Christian Zionists (Christian Pharisees) and Damn Yankees who start wars, make money off of them, but never fight.

I believe that she was a Captain in the AF reserve...if you have a four-year degree in nursing, or any other "professional" field, you start your military career at Captain - for whatever that's worth.

Anyone who doesn't live in the 10 southern states of dixie is a damn yankee, virginia, north carolina, south carolina, georgia, florida, alabama, tennessee, kentucky, arkansas, texas - anyone who doesn't live here can be called a damn yankee. those are the 10 states who stood for the confederacy and against the bankers' empire of the union.

It took almost one year to dissuade my youngest son. They started calling him the summer before his senior year in high school. The schools hand out home phone #s to the recruiters by law according to the "Leave No Child Behind Act". Zip informed me at the time how, and I verified. The recruiters never asked to speak to me first. They only asked for me after they had convinced him at 17. Then they needed my signature, and I refused.

They could take his written statement to his superiors and see what they have to say about it. But even in the early 80's when I was in the recruiters would bend and break any rule they could get away with to sign guys up. I really don't think they have any binding tie on him until he's actually on the payroll. If he refuses to take the oath, then that should get him an out. The recruiter's fraudulent statement should be evidence to snap the civil contract. My nephew is in the army. Special forces. Made Seargent in 2 years. That's right. These warmongers put such a low premium on American and Iraqi lives that it makes me think things I shouldn't be thinking....

When I was a kid my mom rented a converted upstairs apartment in our home to a marine lieutenant, and he took a liking to me. He was a squared away individual and my role model. (Hey, I was already a cub scout so, I figured that I was half way there.) He was a handsome bachelor who drove a maroon, 6-cylinder XKE, and after he let me inspect his dress sword and other kewl stuff, (and, after I saw him around town with the JAG's top down and drop dead gorgeous ladies riding shotgun) I just knew that I wanted to be a marine officer someday. Then came 22 November, 1963. The events of that terrible day are why I'm the way I am today. Needless to say, when the recruiters started calling here for my youngest son and sending mail to my youngest daughter, my (homeschooled) kids knew better than to give the military any serious consideration.

My half brothers' father was what was known as a "boy chief" in the navy during WWII. Normally a CPO would have 12, 14 or 16 years in, but because of the war losses he was a chief well before he was 30 years old. Younger men and women make fine senior NCOs, but they aren't promoted in peace time because there are more qual'ed, older peeps than open slots. As you pointed out, wars change that.

The boy could probably be hired by the fire department because he'd be a legacy, but, because Wilmington is a "Chocolate City" now, the boy's dad has been passed over for lieutenant 3 times in favor of black men and women. (When the city didn't have enough minorities who could pass the LT test, the black chief and mayor promoted no one until they did! Although it's supposed to be a merit system not patronage based, black folks make no effort to hide what they do.) I remember when he was a young idealist who believed in the system and aggressively fought fires, and he earned several commendations for his hairy-chested bravery. (His brother is a firefighter in VA Beach, and he's the same way. Both were jr. members of a volunteer fire company at 16 yrs old, and both have more experience, guts and brains than those promoted over them to achieve "racial equity". Now, they just want to put in their 20 and get out. Ironically, they both tried to get on the FDNY, and when the towers were demo'ed that was one of the first things I thought of. I'm glad they aren't Irish. Otherwise they may have been there that day.... If the son goes in the marines, he'll find that the corps also promotes based on how PC the class picture will be.

How well I know. Recruiters are in show biz, and that's something I know something about! In fact, I suspect that some of my fans used to hear with their eyes! ;) (I say this because when the light struck me a certain way I was almost, well, handsome!) [smile]
I can't get the picture of our family torn up and grieving out of my mind. And, since I ain't buying that "They sacrificed for freedom" jazz, there will be nothing anyone can say to comfort me if things go badly... Every military-eligible young person should have to read and write a book report on WAR IS A RACKET by Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler. And, I hope I get the chance to explain that no matter what he was told, it ain't official until as you said, he takes the step and the oath.
