President Joe Biden is on shaky ground as his re-election campaign officially gets underway.
At 80-years-old, many Democrats don’t think Biden is up to the task of serving another term in office.
Polling consistently shows that the Democrat base wants someone else to lead them at the top of the ticket next year.
But the Democrat establishment rallied around Biden to be the party’s nominee next year.
The party’s Primary is expected to be a coronation for the President after a top-tier challenger failed to emerge.
That isn’t stopping the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from shaking up the party’s Primary calendar to protect Biden though.
The longstanding states at the start of the Primary, Iowa and New Hampshire, were replaced to make South Carolina the first contest.
Biden’s decisive victory in the 2020 South Carolina Primary was the win that propelled him to the nomination after he struggled in the earlier states.
Democratic power broker Rep. James Clyburn’s (D-SC) endorsement was the key to powering Biden’s 2020 victory in South Carolina that turned around his struggling campaign.
Pushing the Iowa and New Hampshire contests back appears to be a way to protect the President from embarrassment against his longshot challengers, spiritual guru Marianne Williamson and heir to the Kennedy political dynasty, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Clyburn let the cat out of the bag on why the DNC reshuffled their Primary calendar during an interview with Chris Wallace on CNN.
Wallace asked him why Democrats were emphasizing South Carolina when the party had little hope of winning the state in the general election.
“Well, you got to win the nomination first,” Clyburn replied. “Why should President Biden sit back and allow a state that he finished fifth in be first up?”
Biden shouldn’t be in any jeopardy of losing a Primary as a sitting President with his party’s backing.
Clyburn’s candid response reveals how worried the party is about Biden being upset in an early Primary state.
“I don’t think you’re stacking the deck,” Clyburn continued. “I think you’re avoiding embarrassment and that is what he is attempting to avoid here. And I would expect anybody to do the same.”
This is direct confirmation from a top Democrat that Biden could risk being humiliated by losing Iowa and New Hampshire in the Primary.
Biden finished fourth in the Iowa caucus and fifth in the New Hampshire Primary in 2020.
Clearly the Democrat establishment is worried about Biden suffering a humiliating defeat at the start of their Primary and rearranged the calendar to stop it.
The last Democrat President to lose a Primary was Jimmy Carter in 1980 before his eventual landslide defeat in the general election.
Joe Biden is heading into the Primary in a position of weakness and even Democrats are willing to publicly admit it.
