Italy's Campi Flegrei is on the verge of its first eruption in 485 YEARS, scientists warn

A 'supervolcano' in a densely populated part of Italy could be on the verge of its first eruption since 1538, researchers have warned.

The Campi Flegrei volcano near Naples, southern Italy, has become weaker and more prone to rupturing, making an eruption more likely, the experts say.

Located about nine miles (14.5 km) to the west of Naples, it is one of the few active supervolcanoes in the world.

Around 360,000 people live at Campi Flegrei and may need to evacuate if experts think it's in immediate danger of an eruption, although scientists say there's no guarantee one will occur anytime soon.

This would shut down agriculture for a year in Europe.

I thought a super volcano only erupted every hundreds of thousands of years?

Super eruptions are rare but not eruptions.

You mean a super volcano can have an ordinary eruption?

Yes. There is a volcano near Mexico City that erupted a few centuries ago and had a super eruption thousands of years ago. It is active again. Either a major eruption or a super eruption would destroy Mexico City, destroy Mexico and flood the US with ten to twenty million more Mexicans.

This would shut down agriculture for a year in Europe.

It seems to me that would depend on the direction of prevailing winds.

The Gulf of Naples is usually very calm during summer, and there are not many strong winds in the area. Typically, winds are from East or Northeast with an average of 15 knots. Occasionally, there are winds of 20 knots, but most of the days are of absolute calm and light winds.

It looks like the winds would be coming from inland so any eruption the ash and smoke would go out over the sea. ;)

This has happened before. In 1815 one volcano erupted in Indonesia and caused "1816 a year without a summer." In 1709 3 volcanoes erupted in Europe and caused "the Big Freeze." The top 40 inches of soil froze in France and sent food prices 600% higher. It has to do with the upper atmosphere, not the winds we feel down at the surface of the earth.

And much more has to do with the sunspot cycles.

During the Maunder Minimum the Thames River in England froze over and there was ice on the canals in Venice. ;)
