Posted by Staff June 8, 2023 Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri was not pleased when he questioned Jaelith Hall-Rivera, the deputy chief of state and private forestry at the U.S. Department of Agriculture before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. Hawley was inquiring into the ramifications of the Biden administrations decision to prohibit mineral mining on nearly a quarter of a million acres in Minnesota. Following a 16-month review by the Department of Interior that found that mining for minerals contaminated nearby waters, the land was deemed fit to be protected for 20 years. He wanted to stress the importance of developing domestic critical mineral mining to provide U.S. energy security. Hawley established that China has a worrisome monopoly, refining 68 percent of the worlds nickel, 40 percent of the worlds copper, 59 percent of the worlds lithium, and 73 percent of the worlds cobalt. Hawley questioned Hall-Rivera on why this protective measure was taken at the expense of the nations autonomy and energy security. Hall-Rivera had to admit she wasnt an expert, but promised to provide more detail. Hawley further pressed on the importance of domestic mining, citing that the United States possesses the best technology in the world to mine and develop minerals responsibly. He made it clear that the Biden administrations decision to revoke the project was misguided, as it could alienate the U.S. and make them more dependent on China, who boasts the worst environmental record of any nation in the world. The mining industry and mining in general is essential to the process of transitioning to green energy, as these minerals and metals are required to manufacture renewable technologies. As the International Energy Agency report suggests, copper, nickel, and lithium are some of the most crucial elements in the creation of renewable tech that will shape the future of a green economy. By prohibiting these mining projects, the Biden administration is ensuring that the United States does not keep up with the demands of the green energy industry, at the same time significantly lessening the competitive economic edge of the nation. With a greater part of energy and economic production becoming more and more reliant on green technology, the United States will have to find ways to acquire the necessary minerals and metals and from sources that it could relatively trust. This is why Hawley was so insistent during the hearing that mining should be allowed to be done domestically. Discussing and finding ways to further progress in this industry should be given greater consideration than it currently is. Hawley is absolutely right. The US should not be making China richer while we struggle to pay our debts in an attempt to keep up with Democrats spending. Chinas safety regulations and sustainable practices are not thereWhereas the US could safely tackle the extraction process in a way that preserves the surrounding natural habitats. Poster Comment: China has been selling its short-term U.S. debt into the secondary markets. So far the FED has been able to buy up those Notes. If they miss a buy just once, all those chickens will come home to roost and the inflation will be much like in Weimar Germany where you needed a wheelbarrow full of German Marks to buy a loaf of bread.
