Just an hours drive from Mount Vesuvius the volcano infamous for burying nearby Pompei lies an even bigger danger to the surrounding population and the wider world. Technically a region of calderas a series of giant craters formed from previous eruptions which are classified as supervolcanoes capable of topping the Volcanic Explosivity Index and causing serious ecological and climatic damage. Although the true force of an eruption is only known once it occurs, increased seismic activity is a telltale sign that gas and magma are building up below. In April alone, scientists recorded over 600 earthquakes in the area. A new study partnering Italys National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and University College London (UCL) concluded the Campi Flegrei has become weaker and more prone to rupturing. Well over a million people in the densely-populated coastal area are at risk according to Italys Civil Protection Agency, and the scale of the devastation could be massive. It is the largest urban centre completely in the red zone the area most likely to be hit by fast-moving volcanic gas clouds, known as pyroclastic flows. In total, some 500,000 people live in this red zone, with a further 800,000 also at substantial risk. Pozzuoli was founded by the ancient Greeks over 2,500 years ago. Mauro Antonio Di Vito, director of the INGVs nearby Vesuvius Observatory, the towns narrow streets would make an emergency evacuation challenging. He said: These areas have been urbanised without considering the fragility. Buildings need to be better structured and we need a cultural change to really encourage people to do this https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1784364/europe-most-dangerous-volcano-eruption Dunelm Summer Sale Europe's most dangerous supervolcano 'on verge of eruption' and may spark global winter An eruption could cause mass extinctions, obliterate crops, and see people living nearby evacuated - but scientists deny such an incident is "inevitable" and explain what triggers would push it to potential breaking point. If the eruption was to be similar to its largest previous one, it would launch molten rock and volcanic gases high into the stratosphere. This would lead to 100-feet-high (33.5 meters) tsunamis and the spread of sulfur and toxic ash that could plunge Earth into global winter for years, destroying crops and wildlife alike.
