Universal always knew that bringing "Miami Vice" to the bigscreen was an ambitious undertaking. Pic was greenlit with a $120 million budget and shooting scheduled over five months in four countries. So it was no surprise that when Michael MannMichael Mann and stars Jamie FoxxJamie Foxx and Colin FarrellColin Farrell began rolling in Miami last June, the production became the target for a steady stream of rumors -- including claims of everything from on-set fights to a spiraling budget.

But now that Mann is in post-production -- shooting wrapped Dec. 10, 14 days over schedule -- U is adamant that while the pic hit its fair share of bumps, it was never out of control.

Mann originally wanted to get under way in late February or early March of last year. But Foxx's commitment to "Jarhead," which didn't wrapwrap until April, as well as an injury to Farrell, pushed the start date to June 27.

Starting so late put the five-month shoot smack into the heart of hurricane season -- which turned out to be a doozy.

"Vice," which was shot almost entirely on location in the Caribbean and South Florida with little soundstage work, lost seven days to hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma.

Then, on Oct. 24, sudden gunshots outside the film's Dominican Republic set led the crew to pull up stakes, costing another three days.

Two other lost days were for reasons a bit more mundane -- a sick day for Farrell and one for Gong Li. Two other days were for production overruns.

U is still crunching the numbers with its insurers on how much of the extra costs are covered under its policies, so it's not clear how much the production hiccups will cost. But a studio reprep estimated that the studio would end up being on the hook for less than $10 million.

As for on-set relationships, Foxx recently joined on to star in Mann's follow-up, "The Kingdom," their fourth collaboration after "Ali," "Collateral" and "Miami Vice."

We went to 'The Davinci Code' yesterday, and saw the trailer for the new, updated Miami Vice. I'm a big Michael Mann fanatic, so, it looks as neo-noir and stylish as ever. Very cool.
