I was there at the demonstration in this video. Yes, the police were assholes that day. POrtland POlice are called PO PO (Long 'O' sound) in Little Beirut which is Portland's nick name. I have been the victim of these tactics and have seen this many times. Let me tell you about the Eugene Tree Riot of 1996 - because Bush and Clinton are on equal footing in promoting this fascist attitude that generate policies you only see when criminals control the government as is the case with the U.S. right now. We had people in forty large trees to be cut down for a commercial development (that still has vacant storefronts in it.) Many people had gathered to watch us be pepper sprayed and pulled from the trees. I heard one police leader day to several cops, "don't start spraying them until the word is given, get ready to push them back." I started yelling from where I was, "They are going to spray you with pepper spray!" I did this over and over. And it was surreal to see people hearing me but not hearing me, not processing the concept that their peaceful assembly was going to end as city mayor Jim Torre had directed it to as he later admitted. That they did actually not have a right to assemble as the Constitution and their rights say they do. I got sprayed, but good. Obviously the cops had heard me. My friend who was later my ground support in my sit that I had been harassed until I fell three stories nearly dying had been targeted by one cop in particular, and he used his karate skills to remove the cop's protective mask with a well placed sweeping kick. He tried to escape, but the State police zeroed in on him as he exited the scene between two buildings. The last of us pulled from the trees, Jim Flynn was drenched in pepper spray. They cut his pants leg away up to his crotch to get the maximum exposure to this chemical as possible. In fact, after the did one pant leg and grabbed the other he jumped from one main truck of the tree to another despite his eyes being welded shut by the misery of capsuim (pepper spray) exposure. He well could have died from a fifty foot fall as cops in a fire department cherry picker did this. They also did Dutch rubs, arm twisting, punches to the meaty parts of his body, and Jim only gave up when he nearly blacked out when the belt the backing up cherry picker had attached to him and that machine had cut off his circulation to half his body so bad. He has what it takes. Too bad more people don't yet, because the cops and their bosses are counting on the assumption the masses don't, and that we all will not wake up to what they are doing, who they are and how they operate. I have seen stuff like this over and over. And like the unreal feeling my warning shouts to the crowd concerning what I had heard and in fact did occur, it often is frustrating and seems unreal when people on these forums argue with me back angered at what I tell them concerning this topic. It gets so frustrating to see such myopia and willful ignorance, I often think, "whats the use of wasting my breath?" If you are interested in actually talking about this, you need not have to prompt much. Because I have had much experience with this sort of thing and I am always interested in dialog with interested people about this slide into fascism we have all experienced like a slow as a tree grows train wreck.
You can tell people.. but unless they SEE it ..it doesnt exist .. for they have a difficult time digesting that this actually is happening here .. after all 1st Amendment..they are under the false assumption that speech etc is protected!! I've seen some of those tactics used recorded on video.. purposeful breaking of arms etc... the first time I saw this .. I WAS truly shocked.. I couldnt believe it.. welcome to the USSA.

This video should be very useful to help people see. Then when future incidents occur, people will be more willing to believe the reports of the victims, with or without a camera rolling.

Thanks. The Tree Riot was late chosen by the Register Guard - the local daily newspaper - as the story of the year. It created a storm of controversy, and it opened my eyes to truth I am to this horrified to know about this country I care deeply about. Another applicable example if this problem I was involved in: In that time period in the late nineties kids who are rootless and wander a lose circuit of West Coast cities had started hanging around East Thirteenth Street in the area immediately adjacent to the University of Oregon. The city in the week before parent's week on campus did several days of sweeps where people were arrested for the most contrived of things. If you walked out of the Circle K at 13th and High Street and paused on the store's apron to sip your drink, you were arrested under the auspices of the loitering statute, as you were not conducting normal business at that particular business like buying something or shopping as you just did. The local trespassing law has property owners sign on the police as agents for them to determine just who is or is not trespassing. They are 'strongly urged to do this by the police and city officials and few property owners fail to give into the persuasion to do this the city offers. People who were waiting to be picked up by family or friends after school, or were waiting for the bus were arrested, people changing flat tires on their bikes were arrested; anyone at all the police saw as fitting a profile were targeted and arrested. I was down there doing Cop Watch duties with several other activists documenting what was going on. An hour after our videographers were arrested I saw a fellow activist in the face of a cop demanding his name and badge number. I walked close and leaned into hearing range and said, "His name is Larry Crompton, and I would get away from that one if I were you." The next thing I knew, Crompton was telling me I was under attest for trespassing. I felt my bicycle being pulled from me and my wrists being taken in hand to be handcuffed. Apparently I was on a part of the sidewalk owned by the Eugene Flower Home - a florist - though I had no idea where the city property line on the sidewalk ended and the florist shop's began. I immediately went limp and told them, "You want me that bad, carry me then." Crompton kept ordering me to "Get Up." Another cop tried to play fiend and said in a patronizing way, "It wouldn't be fair for one of us to get a back injury carrying you now, would it." I said that that was her and their problem, not mine. Crompton leaned onto me, and coyly started blowing in my ear. We learned about incitement tactics in non-violent dissent training, and I was ready for this tactic to get me angry and struggling and yelling to accrue additional charges of resisting on me. I said, "Oh baby yes, blow in my ear you sweet little ugly stud muffin you." He stopped. He did recount to me that he could use the two fingers on my nostrils pulling up tactic to get me to painfully comply. Which is why I suppose in the trial afterward the video he shot never materialized. They carried me to the car and used the pain compliance tactic of poking pressure points in my neck until I was screaming in pain. I finally was hoisted and pushed into the car and went to jail. Most people just paid the fines and didn't want any more trouble. The rest of us know how expensive the trial process is to them and took the cases to District court after being found guilty of trespassing in the Eugene city court. In the court of record none of these cases held up. But as many people just don't want to deal with fighting the police when they operate in a fascist manner, only enough impact was made to not have these sweeps again since that year, not to make these people accountable for what they did. They also passed a law against dogs and skateboards on E13th Street. But if you are dressed nicely and have a purebred dog you just got out of your BMW with, you are not seen by the police. But if you are a 'traveler' with a mongrel on a rope sitting there spare changing, guess which law you are cited for breaking? Larry Crompton is only one fascist, criminal thug on the Police force here. Just because I made him hate me and very very uncomfortable in the media (I am very well known locally) doesn't mean he is the only thug on the Eugene Police Force, so I am not trying to pick on him exclusively, to be fair to him. ;-) I learned that day that laws are enforced to enforce the whims of the powers that be, and in the case of the sweeps ordered that I was sucked up into the ones that worry about how the city looks to visitors here for Parent's week at the OU, as this influences the take of donations from them and the alumni of the UO. Never think that because you are obeying laws that you are not going to be effected, because if the powers that be ever see you in the way of, or interfering ( and documenting is dangerous interference to them) you are a target, first class and will be dealt with as coldly efficiently as possible.

This is why they want 20 million illegals given amnesty to further divide and erode the culture and cohesiveness of AmeriKa. divide and conquer. This is why Justice is dead. A friend of mine who chained himself to a bulldozer at a construction site for Hyundai Semiconductor's factory here had his arm broken quickly, efficiently and expertly. He has become since then a mover and shaker in the alternate media movement that we have to record and document this sort of abuse by police. I have seen many of the tactics the militarized police locally have practiced and use to try to discourage local demonstrations. If you go to a Critical Mass ride on the last Friday of every month, this small peaceful group has at least ten to fifteen cops riding with them or monitoring the ride with cameras and sound equipment. I've seen almost a one cop per rider ratio, but as the purpose (which unfortunately works) is to be so intimidating, no one in their right mind shows up, they never cut the detail down in size to better reflect a balanced response to a political action. Which in Critical mass' case is to ride with friends to promote bicycling over driving.

I have the video of the fascist Gestapo at that tree riot. I believe I taped it from a PBS documentary. Your assumption is correct that they count on non-action by the masses. It is, of course, their only saviour, because we outnumber the police, military and Gestapo exponentially. Should we fight, they will lose. We have a duty to throw off tyranny. Now that I'm utterly depressed by that film, I wish I had my Red X's back....however, 25 years ago, at least, I was telling friends that we needed to fear police more than criminals.

Unfortunately, you are correct. By my estimation, we are all screwed anyway at this late date. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think so.
