They should have done like Patton said at the end of WW II. "Kick their asses back into Russian where they belong while we have the men and equipment here to do it."
Patton was killed because he found out they allowed Hitler to escape to Spain at the end of the war and he would not go along with it. This deal was part of Operation Paperclip where we brought scientists and other high Nazi officials to the U.S.
But the U.S. and Russia were allies against the Nazis and that was never in the cards.
The Iron Curtain was decided on in 1943 in Tehran at the meeting of the Big Four. And that Iron Curtain held up until Reagan and Gorbachev made the deal for it to fall. ;)
